The Chinese antivirus company Tencent will sue German test lab AV-Test for fraud accusations. AV-Test reported this week that Tencent provided them with virus scanners that were optimized to perform better in tests of the test lab. The optimisations would also have no advantages for users and even lower the protection level of the products.

Tencent argues it hasn’t violated any rules of the test lab. The Chinese antivirus company therefore asks AV-Test to withdraw its accusations and give back all awards and certificates, according toChina Radio International.

Besides Tencent, also Chinese antivirus vendor Qihoo360 was accused of fraud by three test labs, including AV-Test. Qihoo denied the accusations and argued that all test methods of the test labs were targeted at western internet users and that the company will therefore no longer participate in future tests.

Not sure what Tencent is doing by suing. They don't earn from their AVs. Their revenue comes from their other products, and they are earning billions from them. There is no indication that this "censure" is even affecting their revenue at all. Sure they may lose face, but still, wasting money on lawsuits?

In any case, if the chinese companies decide to be nasty on these organisations, it would be a real mess. We are talking about comparatively small testing companies fighting against the chinese equivalent of Google/Microsoft etc. These AV test organisation definitely do not have the resources to fight against a company that has a net worth of US$206 billion.

Cough, cough....

Allegations + Accusations + Revelations + Complains = A new Conspiracy Theory at its finest. ;)

First of all there should be witnesses who are willngly to solve these confusing problem about optimization to reach the test which its a special product if prove that exist.

Picture/Screenshot as a solid evidence to clear everything up or make a video.

In Spain it is called "resource tantrum." That is, I have no right, you caught me doing something wrong, you who you were informed to report. Well I'll be bothering you until I get bored.

Pathetic, but it must work when the twenty-first century is still doing this

"Losing face" is huge deal in Chinese culture.

Anyhow, in 6 months no one will remember this incident... just like all the other scandals involving companies - they eventually all "go away."

I don't care about AV-T, AV-C and VB results per se... I just use them as a general guide. Typical user on the other hand interprets their results as de facto endorsement of AV X, Y and Z... really bad news, I think.

This debate is getting pointless.

Regardless of management and their poor judgment, Qihoo and Tencent products are solid, respectable. In the case of Qihoo, one can certainly choose a product that is a whole lot worse.

The best way to voice your displeasure is to boycott the products... even freeware versions.

Performance of Qihoo product is good.

Qihoo management decisions are not.

That's what I meant... you know what I mean.

The companies screwed-up and now huge user back-lash... especially among Western hemisphere users. Who knows what mainland Chinese or Taiwanese users think...

First I do not think I can access mainland Chinese servers... and even if I could, I can't read any Chinese.

It's not like Qihoo or Tencent are going to go out of business over all of this... it is just a minor bump in the road - more than likely...

It's a matter of conscience... not product performance.

I won't use their products.
