Hot Take Chrome increases its overwhelming market share, now over 70%

The last time I switched away from Firefox, I suppose it also had to do with the subpar experience I was having on Android. Hopefully it improved. I do like syncing between desktops and my phone.
FF is losing user base faster than Edge (for Chrome); it needs some major change to come back to race.

Popularity reigns. Most people, especially the younger generation, recognize Google apps/icons. Google is very popular. Many people say "Chrome" or "Google" instead of "internet" or "search."

In a landmark antitrust lawsuit brought by the U.S. Department of Justice, a federal court ruled in August 2024 that Google illegally maintained its monopoly in the general search and search advertising markets.

The core of the case focused on Google's practice of paying billions of dollars annually to companies like Apple, Android device manufacturers, and browser developers to ensure Google was the exclusive, default search engine on their platforms.

The DOJ successfully argued, and the court agreed, that these exclusionary agreements unfairly stifled competition by preventing rival search engines from gaining the necessary scale and data to effectively compete.

As of September 2025, the case has progressed to the remedies phase, where the court is now determining the specific penalties and structural changes that will be imposed on Google to curb its anti-competitive behavior, with a final decision expected in late 2025 or early 2026.
A federal judge ruled Tuesday that the company can keep its Chrome browser but will be barred from exclusive contracts and must share search data.

Edge is the default browser of Windows (the dominant PC OS); however, it is far behind the expected marketshare.
People prefer Chrome over Edge for simplicity.
People have been using Chrome before Edge and they have their bookmarks, passwords and everything synced to Google, so they just download Chrome for convenience.

I know everything can be imported into Edge, but most people have no idea what that is, so they just keep using what they know.

People used to click on Internet (IE) icon to connect to the internet, than MS decided to change the name, underestimating how stupid people are, losing millions in the process.

I have bookmarks saved in html file to transfer from browser to another one.
My password are in docx file in password protected pea file.
I do not ever use browser sync.
But I still keep Chrome on my PC alongside the primary browser (usually Edge).
Chrome is considered the reference browser, just as egg is considered the reference protein.

I don't sync anything either, my hundreds of bookmarks are saved in HTML also, & takes seconds to transfer, most of the time I use Firefox or Wolf for browsing & Brave for other uses, I still have Edge just about uninstalled for months. Nuts are also great for protein :p

You may like to eat eggs or not, but egg protein still the one used for benchmarking other proteins; the same applies to Chrome, you may prefer the way Chrome works or not, but still Chrome the reference for benchmarking chromium browsers.
