“We need to take the Internet back,” said Vivaldi CEO Jon von Tetzchner, addressing the question about the role of technology in defending democracies at the Oslo Freedom Forum.

Jon, who has devoted his life to bringing Internet to people, said access to information is of paramount importance for democracy, and the Internet plays a key role here.

However, he believes that during the past few years, the technology has been misused with the purpose of drowning information in customized “fake news”.

“The Empire strikes back,” Jon said at the Oslo Freedom Forum, referring to third parties collecting and using people’s data for targeting purposes. “They’ve been finding ways to utilize the channels that we’ve been building to feed false information in ways that we don’t even recognize.”
According to Jon, targeting is part of the problem. “The technical community needs to think about how we [can] contribute, and the governments need to think about how they contribute, too,” Jon said.

This is a submerged reality where anyone who has the power to highlight things, because of obvious reasons, prefers to remain silent or distorting the reality.
At least Jon had the courage to say things as really they are.

I feel the focus on fake news here is a bit misguided. Sure, fake news is a problem that needs to be solved but I don't think it's the problem the internet faces right now. I feel governmental abuse of the internet for censorship or surveillance is a bigger threat to our society as a whole as it risks turning democracies into authoritarian or totalitarian regimes.
