RAT's are frequently featured on TV in various shows. It is super creepy. Not harmless fun. It could really mess someone up. Let's just say the people behind such attacks usually have some type of pathology. Cover your webcam. Electrical tape, business card, etc. If you are really paranoid - some PC's allow you to disable built in devices in the BIOS setup. I assume this is effective?
Sometimes, because of clickjacking, the user clicks with the mouse pointer over an object, for example a link or the play button on a fake video link that actually redirects to another object. Typically, the vulnerability takes advantage of JavaScript so it can infect you with a RAT that activates your webcam and microphone.
I have some doubts that it is possible to fully disable the webcam via BIOS, or at least not on all the notebook's models..
The problem is that the webcam and microphone are used in chat rooms and users don't think to disable them.
Here on MT, we talked about this matter in a old thread, and the best solution is ... to put a band aid over it if not used and you can disable microphone in the audio settings.
It is certainly also necessary to have a good security level, and maybe an anti-webcam logger, e.g Zemana Antilogger Premium.
I like how symantec list "Best practices" in this video and doesn't say like "Only Symantec can protect you from creepware'', "We are better than other security software...bla, bla'' Some pc security companies should learn from them, how to make good informative videos, unlike others claiming 100% detection ratio, best price, best protection..
Indeed, moreover, I believe that not many people know this kind of attacks.

A person is not easily infected, if aware on the suspicious activity alongside of being knowledgeable.
You have the right to download stuffs from torrents and other sites just make sure its clean and safe.The number of downloads, valid comments and seeders should be enough reference.
My experience through environment, conclude that many are already practical and did not fall on any trap.
