Mozilla is working on a new feature for its Firefox web browser: automatic picture-in-picture mode. It is currently available in Firefox Nightly 130 and could launch in Firefox Stable later this year.

Most modern web browsers support Picture-in-Picture mode. It allows users to display video content in a separate window on the system. Ideal for keeping an eye on the video while switching to another tab to do something else.

Up until now, activation of Picture-in-Picture mode was a manual affair. You had to click on the icon while hovering over the video to launch it.

Firefox would then display the video in its own window, and you could move it around, resize it, and control playback.

If you run the latest Firefox Nightly, currently at version 130, you may enable the newly added automatic Picture-in-Picture mode in the browser.

Once done, Firefox will launch a Picture-in-Picture window automatically when you play a video and switch away from its tab to another. Very handy to continue watching uninterrupted and without having to start the mode manually.

This is indeed an exciting update! The automatic Picture-in-Picture mode in Firefox Nightly 130 will certainly enhance user experience by allowing uninterrupted video viewing while multitasking on other tabs. Can't wait for this feature to be launched in Firefox Stable.

Great to hear Mozilla is innovating!

I like Firefox so much! But it does have two annoying bugs that bug me all the time. First one is "copy bug" where copy function in context menu is sometimes disabled for no reason. Even though the bug is 9 months old, developers confirmed they are now working on it.
Second issue I have is with the spell checker. I constantly need both languages (Croatian and English), but Firefox randomly enables one or another. The problem is a lot of Croatian communities on the internet are on .com domains so I have to activate spell checker again and again. My guess is Firefox enables Croatian/English depending on domain; .hr has Croatian spell check enabled, .com and other English spell check.
Anyway, I reported the bug to Mozilla and we'll see what will happen with that.

Mozilla has been working on improvements for the Picture-in-Picture mode implementation of the Firefox web browser. One of the improvements gives users an option to automate the mode. This feature has now landed in Firefox Nightly; reason enough to check it out.

What is automatic Picture-in-Picture mode? When enabled, Firefox will launch the mode whenever you switch a tab while a video is playing. The mode ends automatically when you switch back to the website that plays the video.

The mode is not enabled by default, but you can enable it in the following way:
  1. Make sure you run the latest version of Firefox Nightly. Open Menu > Help > About Firefox to check that.
  2. Open the experimental settings of the browser through this URL: about: preferences#experimental
    1. You can also select Menu > Settings > Firefox Labs to get there manually.
  3. Check Picture-in-Picture: auto-open no tab switch.
The feature is available immediately, a restart is not required.

Firefox 130 stable released today, something got fixed what sounds similar like your mentioned issue:
Fixed an issue where Copy and Paste context menu items intermittently were not enabled when expected.

Yep, the issue I mentioned and someone else on this forum is finally fixed. It was supposed to be fixed in Firefox 131, but developer asked if it could be pushed in 130. Now the only thing that bugs me is built-in dictionary. 😁
When I read "someone else" I thought you talk about the copy and paste issue, finally it is fixed:
