OpenDNS is your best bet. You can find the tutorial in their website.
If you want to use other dns, you have to get their address and go to
Control Panel---Network and Sharing center---right click on your network and select properties---Slide down and select IPv4 and select properties---Use the following DNS server address and put them in---Apply and close

Is OpenDNS Premium free if you create account?
Or there is a free & premium?
If Yes, whats the difference?
Does it provides any extra security compared to NortonDNS?
Currently using NortonDNS with Porn Block.

OpenDNS is free without even creating an account.
An account is only needed if you want the parental control feature. It can be customized to block specific types of websites.
OpenDNS uses universal cache and loading popular websites like Facebook or twitter may be faster.
OpenDNS uses Phishtank so Phishing protection will be better than Norton.
If you signup for an account(it's free), you can also customize it to block porn websites and may more.
Google Public DNS is very fast but is not recommended for security as it logs what you search in google servers. Might be a good choice when using a VPN service.

OpenDNS as @Harish_Shan23 talked about is all around much better than any other DNS. Seems even my VPN service uses it while it's on as I see custom DNS IP's from OpenDNS. I don't know what Secure DNS is unless your talking about Comodo. In that case, Comodo is inferior by far against Norton.

@Van2r While I'm not advanced in networking, I believe that a good DNS would improve gaming speed in terms of ping and latency. OpenDNS has the best results when I tested it against other DNS like Google DNS. The faster a DNS can resolve an address, the better your overall experience will be.

OpenDNS has had some down times many times in my years of using it. It always comes back up within 30 minutes. Averaging around... say 15 minutes or so. Probably just maintenance.

A fast DNS doesn't provide any better ping, only a faster name resolution. ;)
A good VPN however can reduce the hops it takes for a packet to reach its destination (better routing et cetera), like a game server, thus reducing your ping.

I think changing your router settings are better than changing your individual computers because it would protect the entire network rather than just you computer, just check your IP address and type it into the browser to get your control panel for your router! Then change the default DNS to whatever you want. I also recommend the OpenDNS, I've been using it for some time and I do find that some sites load faster now.

On top of phishing prevention, OpenDNS also protects you from DNS poisoning which have been used by many hackers to redirect traffic from one site to another.

How to change DNS ?

If you want to set the DNS and you're running Windows 7 or Windows 8, click on the network connection icon and select Open network and sharing center of bounding box that appears. About Windows 8 you have to right click the network icon instead of left click to display the settings menu.

In the window that opens, click the name of the connection you are using and go to connection settings by clicking on the properties button.

Now, scroll through the list the connection uses the following items and select, by double clicking on it, the Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4). In the window that opens, put the checkmark next to Use the following DNS server addresses, type in preferred DNS Server and alternate DNS Server addresses of the primary and secondary DNS server you want to use for your connection and click on the OK button twice to save the settings.

If your VPN (assuming you use one) pushes their own DNS, then snap them up... otherwise OpenDNS + DNS Crypt.

If the DNS is entered manually, Windows forces the rest to be entered manually as well. You can't swap the DNS to manual but keep "Obtain IP address automatically" as is...

Also, your router has a section to provide custom DNS addresses too... normally it is fine to customise Windows only... but there are few instances where manually entering into router is required also... gotta love DNS leaks.

DHCP takes care of the automatic assignment of IP addresses to internal machines on a network, while the DNS is used to resolve the IP address of a host.

We clarify: one thing is the DNS address and one thing is the internal IP.

The DNS server is assigned by the supplier of connectivity and then sent from the router to the client (unless you manually set differently), while the IP is assigned by the DHCP server of your network that can be either a router or a server.

If what changes is the address of the DNS server obviously the router has received this change by the server connectivity provider and therefore reflects on client PCs this variation.

Norton DNS is capable more in protection category type but it vary on the browsing performance to retrieve the request.

Open DNS and few of others have the capabilities to improve the browsing by matching the server based but protection capabilities may vary. (AFAIK)

In such way go to the category for improving browsing performance and let your AV/extensions do the job for web based threats.

I've taken control over it anyway... put personalised DNS entries in firewall rule, attached to the "dnscache / DNS Client" Windows Service, so net is active but not accessible till VPN loads up. F*^k Windows, I control everything... lol
