Download Sentinel is an extension available for Chromium-based browsers (Brave, Google Chrome, Edge, Vivaldi, etc.) by @LinuxFan58
Its purpose is simple: to check what you’re downloading via VirusTotal and protect you from potentially malicious downloads.
To do this, you need to obtain a (free) API key and register on the VirusTotal website.

Sentinel also features a site reputation check via the Quad9 service.

Let’s take a look at how it works...



As shown in the test, Download Sentinel flags all downloads as malicious, earning a score of 10/10.

However, it is not a web filter! During my anti-phishing tests on fake online stores, Sentinel didn’t block any of them despite having a reputation check—which is normal, since that’s not its purpose… (though I’d love to see that feature added someday).
Recommended as a supplement to your antivirus software, but it doesn’t replace it.

Congratulations on the excellent performance (I never had the slightest doubt) of your extension, Download Sentinel, which is gaining new users every day.

DS has another feature,one that’s obvious, but worth mentioning,the notification does not overlap with other actions.
For example, in my case, since I’ve enabled the DownloadRestrictions policy, I haven’t noticed 2 consecutive actions.

P.S.

As for me, I wouldn't be very enthusiastic about the DS having a web filter in the future.

Maybe this video convinces Linux users (no AV) and UnGoogled/Chromium users (no Google safe browsing) to consider adding it

Because it is triggered by standard Chrome triggers, it does not use memory or CPU when nothing is downloaded.

Also it is a Sentinel not a Guard by design. By comparing the Mime Type with file Type when written to disk and on-download file type with actual file type written, it warns for risky downloads which would not be noticed when the extension blocked the download (now it also registers redirect obfuscation and changes along the way). This is the reason it warns after the download and does not block downloads, hence Download Sentinel and not Download Guard.
