Most of the BSODs are the result of not having certain Microsoft hotfixes. Typically BSODs occur on W7 machines missing a certain MS hotfix.

Installing Emsisoft Internet Security on a system does not guarantee a BSOD will occur. The BSODs are exaggerated. Only a few people may experience them, but suddenly everyone says
"stay away from EIS cuz it will coz a BSOD!!"

For W8\8.1 there should be no problems.

Avast IS gave you a sad face, Emsisoft IS will give you a BSOD (blue screen) unless Emsisoft released a fix for that.
According protection:
Both programs will serve you very well but let's focus on some details:
- Detection-
Emsisoft has better signatures but not far from avast

-Behavior Blocker-
Emsisoft has one of the best behavior blocker but avast has ''evogen'' ''filerep'' and IF you enabled it.....''hardened mode''

-Cleaning Capabilities-
I think Emsisoft is better, however avast has ''boot time scan''.

-Support-
Emsisoft by far.....

- System start up & performance-
Avast

- Memory Usage-
Avast

My personal opinion:
Try Avast free and modify the settings and if you are not satisfied then go and buy Emsisoft ANTIMALWARE.
Emsisoft antimalware is more stable than Emsisoft Internet Security with no any problems.

Overall:
Your system is something that you know better than anybody here. Your internet habits too. Try them and decide with which product you feel more secure.

If you have a W7 Pro, Enterprise, or Ultimate system, then you need a certain Microsoft Hotifix to prevent a BSOD when installing EIS.

what hotfix is that

Hello dragonx1983,

If you install Emsisoft Internet Security, the installer will prompt you when it detects any missing, but required Microsoft Hotfixes and/or updates. Emsi has this feature built-in to the installer for your convenience.

The EIS installer will also prompt you to remove Oracle's Virtual Box if it is installed on your system. Unfortunately, VB and EIS are incompatible at this time.

What version of Windows are you using?

For Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate the hotfix details can be found here:

https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2958399

Details regarding Windows 7 SP1 are also mentioned at the above link.
