ESET stuff said on their forum that the upcoming new products, in addition to folder protection, will also have "Ransomware Remediation" feature (rollback encrypted files?) and support for NPU (On device AI-powered detection functionality?).
(Customer satisfaction survey 2024)

We are approaching the release of new versions of our security products, some of which will introduce new features, such as Folder Guard, Ransomware Remediation, support for neural processing units (NPU) and others.
Beware, more specifically - some, may be "Ultimate" or enterprise versions.

Given that folder protection doesn't work if you disable HIPS, it looks like they just prescribed rules that used to be able to be manually prescribed and called it a new feature. Cheap and smart, good marketing, basically nothing new in the product, but they can announce that they have done something new. :)

If they added preconfigured HIPS rules it would greatly help their users. Most of their clients will never stop to learn how HIPS work.

I don't blame them. Their app structure is based on modules that can talk to each other, and they update these modules independently, so any new improvements can be implemented with a normal update when they're ready just by updating the module during the year, like how they added multi-threaded scanning just by a simple normal update in the 17 version series. But I agree that it seems that protection wise, they ran out of ideas, and this is a disappointing update. it seems their current approach is working so they don't want to mess with a winning formula.

Yes, they add new features - enhancements throughout the year. Mostly like 17.1.x - 17.2.x . From that perspective, waiting for a new major release is less exciting.

this is a new and better way of programming and releasing to the public, apple started to do it too for example with ios18 ios18.1, and so on, and many other companies are doing it releasing a feature/major update gradually when it's ready, not waiting for annual release, etc. it makes many releases less exciting but its the better way more benefit for the user.

the multi-thread scanning was ready so they released it with the 17 series updates, and did not wait for the major release.

the fun part is it was just a 13MB update! but seems some modules and core engines had some refinements because the update required a restart

I just now realized that they didn't add Folder Protection to Essential (formerly Internet Security). Even though it's not even a separate tricky module, it's just a way to easily customize HIPS, and Essantial itself is not a cheap product .... With all my love for Eset, but their pricing policy is crazy, given that they don't have significant promotions and big discounts, which Norton, Bitdefender, Kaspersky have all the time.

That's expected, and still disappointing.

I don't know about Bitdefender, but at least Kaspersky doesn't block essential protection features behind a price tag. K-Standard is just as capable as K-Plus and K-Premium on what really matters, leaving features not related to security to their higher end products. Why ESET is so reluctant on following the same approach is beyond me.

Their prices are not competitive and their protection although good in most tests can still disappoint on some fronts as seen recently.

Kaspersky free alone has basically the same default protection as standard

Only reason I'm not using Kaspersky is political issue and lower ksn after ban

At least with LiveGuard their logic was clear. This function requires significant computing power in the cloud, so they want extra money for it. But folder protection is just something that Internet Security already has - just turn it on!
I'm using live guard advanced via trials XD
it's actually not bad at all but i still send files to other verdict clouds some with human verdicts before running a suspicious binary

wow, I did not expect that. It's incredibly disappointing! As our friends mentioned Kaspersky in its basic form(standard) actually gives all the things a person needs from multi-device protection to a firewall and all the core protection modules are the same in Kaspeksy range. Bitdefender too on a higher tier just add some optimizer and password manager and stuff.
Kaspersky is unique because its basic suit offers firewalls, optimizers, many extras.
the thing that concerns me is that the industry start to follow eset foot steps and for better protection make you pay more. I hope this does not become a normal thing. disappointed on eset they becoming a greedy company. and themselves becoming some kind of virus! because they will have a bad influence on the industry
