What is the difference between Automatic mode and Smart mode ?

I think Smart Mode has several built-in HIPS rules that are not in the Automatic Mode to combat malware. So, expect the HIPS to alert more about suspicious behaviors than when you're simply using the Automatic Mode.
You may read ESET's manual because I'm sure an explanation is there.
Smart Mode is usually the preferred HIPS option.
