Battle Eset vs Kaspersky Cloud Free vs Avast Free

Hi friends. I'm looking for a non intrusive, set and forget solution for a friend. She's a total noob about this matter, but she has a bad habit of to visit the Dark Side.... I'm thinking if ESET paid o Kaspersky Cloud AV free, plus Ublock Origin or Adguard Extension. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Best regards

I don’t know what you mean by Dark Side, I hope it’s not the dark web
No AV can protect you from everything that’s lurking there.

In my opinion Kaspersky will be the best choice from these 3, as it displays less alerts than Avast Free and has better detection than ESET.
You can set heuristic analyses for file and web antivirus to max and you can also block access to legitimate remote support tools, which may prevent your friend from becoming a victim of tech support scam.

I agree with @McMcbrad. Kaspersky would be a better choice specially for users with bad browsing habit. Besides, KSC is free while for ESET you will have to pay, and it's usually not cheap in most locations. Overall KSCF > Avast free.

Hello,

Kaspersky is one of the best applications you can install in terms of security. The question is not if you are 100% secure, but how hard is to infect a PC with Kaspersky on, and how good you have to be to do that.

I don't know what you mean with dark side, but in my case KIS (Kaspersky Internet Security) has been tested by me with success and with almost 100% efficacy, in porn sites, cracks, torrents, I am not a good example I go with frequency to these sites.

If dark side is dark web, Kaspersky extension is disposable for Thor. I don't go that much to dark web because almost every time I find child porno sites and that is a line i don't cross, so I have no interest in dark web, but I believe Kaspersky can protect you or your friend even there.

Powerful and set-and-forget solution of the three would IMO be Kaspersky. I use it on my family's computers (free and paid) and never had any problems so far.

* * 3p-script block
* com * noop
* gov * noop
* io * noop
* net * noop

and then put this in My Filters

||HTTP://*$3p,~stylesheet,~image,~media

A lot of the bad stuff comes from 3rd party scripting etc. I would recommend Bitdefender Traffic Light as an addon as well.

Bitdefender TrafficLight is not needed when using Kaspersky Security Cloud Free with its Kaspersky Protection extension in your browser.
Kaspersky is as good as (maybe even beter) than Bitdefender in protecting you from malware and phishing websites.

Enforcing the browser to block or prevent harmful sites is one key step that you have over-looked. Consider these Browser extensions; uBlock Origin, Adguard Ad-Blocker, Malwarebytes Browser Guard, Bitdefender TrafflicLight.

Avast and Kaspersky may prompt in-app Ads to upgrade to their paid tiers. This may be considered intrusive and something you will need to explain, should you choose either of these.

Paid options like ESET, won't guarantee the PC will remain malware free. I assume the PC is running Windows 10 Home.

Think of a recovery plan for the worse case scenario.

But please not all of them at the same time... (less is more).
1 adblocker: uBlock Origin or AdGuard.
1 security extension, but only when not provided by your av of choice (Avast/AVG and Kaspersky have their own extension): Bitdefender TrafficLight or Malwarebytes Browser Guard.
IMO the third (necessary) extension should be a password manager.

True, but I prefer the Malwarebytes extension after all. It blocks infected elements on the page instead of blocking the whole page like Kaspersky. But it's just personal preference.

On my tests it was always blocking the whole page... if it can block infected elements only, it is similar to Avast/AVG Web Shield, which can re-write the page without the problematic code (removes the whole <div>).

Depends what the dark side means, avast is probably good against torrent malware/adware as the behaviour blocker will act agressive

Ublock origin will block most rogue ads so avast & kaspersky do even, except kaspersky has better protection against phishing

I guess any of three is good pick

I have to admit I didn't check the extension out for quite a while,so I'm not in the position to still recommend it. When last checking it out it blocked an animated ad leading to an infected site. At least Malwarebytes said it's infected. That was quite some time ago, so I'm not sure how it's working now.

Thanks guys for your great suggestions. Dark Side maybe it's a bit apocalyptic ... She likes reading and she's used to looking for ebooks on harmful sites, with lot of popups, scam, phising... I decided to try Kaspersky Cloud Free (KIS it's a bit intrusive, heavy on resources and buggy in past experiences) and Adguard or Ublock extension.
