As
reported by XDA, it would appear the exclusivity deal between Qualcomm and Microsoft's Windows on ARM operating system is set to expire "soon". Although
Windows on ARM was initially announced by Microsoft back in 2016, no other chipset manufacturer aside from Qualcomm has been able to release a chipset natively compatible for the ARM-based operating system. Even Samsung's Galaxy Book series running Windows on ARM is
using Snapdragon processors manufactured by Qualcomm. Microsoft and Qualcomm have had a strong relationship in the past as well, going as far back as the days of the Windows Phone where Qualcomm-based chips were used exclusively.
An early contender, MediaTek, has signaled its intention to develop processors compatible with Windows on ARM according to the report. While interest from other organizations becomes more publicly known, Qualcomm has had an advantage point through experience over the years and with its intention of building its own custom silicon thanks to the
acquisition of Nuvia.
While the exclusivity deal is set to expire soon, no specific date has been given. Once the deal has expired however, it very well may be on the cards for Apple Silicon based Macs to finally receive native support of Windows on ARM.
