Followed the process recommended here - http://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-fbdownloader-search/ - twice but not managed to remove the problem. The following issues seem to keep reappearing in adwcleaner scans.

File : C:\Users\Diane\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Preferences

Deleted [l.8] : homepage = "hxxp://search.fbdownloader.com/?channel=sfuk205",
Deleted [l.12] : urls_to_restore_on_startup = [ "hxxp://search.fbdownloader.com/?channel=sfuk205" ]
Deleted [l.206] : homepage = "hxxp://search.fbdownloader.com/?channel=sfuk205",
Deleted [l.348] : urls_to_restore_on_startup = [ "hxxp://search.fbdownloader.com/?channel=sfuk205" ]

Have I missed deleting a file buried deep in the PC or is something being missed by scans? Any help appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the malwaretips.com forums!

I'm Kuttus and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:
  • I will start working on your malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Before we start:
Please be aware that removing malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.
<hr />

STEP 1: Run the below OTL fix
<ol><li>Start <>OTL.exe</></li>
<li>Copy/paste the following text written <>inside of the code box</> into the <>Custom Scans/Fixes</> box located at the bottom of OTL
Code:

<>NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system</></li>
<li>Then click the <>Run Fix</> button at the top</li>
<li>Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done</li>
<li>Attach the new log produced by OTL (C:\_OTL)</li>

Do you mean run your OTL script again or run the Full scan as attached to the original post?

Yes there's still a problem. It is restricted to one user only and is active in both IE and Chrome. I've attached another adwcleaner scan so you can see that the fbdownloader code has reappeared in the same place again. Not deleted it yet as something is buried in the machine that keeps causing the code to reappear.

If I manually change the options in both browsers to remove fbdownloader as home page it will keep the new settings until I log out as the user or reboot the machine. It might be either of these actions that causes the code to reappear, or both of them, I can't be sure which one it is. But I'm pretty sure that it is one of these which causes the virus to hijack the browser again. Something to do with the log on proceedure?

If I do that on my user profile, it is OK and I get the expected homepage. If I do that logged in as the problem user it brings up fbdownloader as homepage.

From which user account you are running the OTL? Please run the OTL from the infected user account.

OK have done that. Log attached. The OTL.exe file is located in the clean profile, does that matter? I also have to confirm it is OK to run as admin (which is the clean account). Will this impact the scan?

In the infected user press on Windows Key and R Key together on your keyboard. Bow you will get a Run Window. Inside that Run Window Type INETCPL.CPL/b] and press on Ok. Now you will get a Internet Properties window.

In the General Tab you can Set your Home page...... Delete the Current home page there and add the new home page as http://www.google.com/ and press on Ok.

In the infected user profile Open Internet Explorer from c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe .
Check what is the home page you are getting.

It works initially. But if I log out and then back into the infected user profile and restart IE then fbdownloader reappears. It was still there in Google Chrome as well. Just for interest I ran an OTL scan with the all users box ticked so I've attached that log file as well.

Please run the following utility so that I can get a log of your system...
STEP 2 : Run a scan with Combofix
Please read and follow very carefully the below instructions

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

COMBOFIX DOWNLOAD LINK #1 (This link will automatically download Combofix on your computer)
COMBOFIX DOWNLOAD LINK #2 (This link will automatically download Combofix on your computer)
----------------------------------------------------------------
VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

<ul>
<li>Close any open browsers.</li>
<li>Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
<>Very Important!</> Temporarily <>disable</> your <>anti-virus</>, <>script blocking</> and any <>anti-malware</> real-time protection <em><>before</></em> performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause <em>"unpredictable results"</em>.</li>
<li><>WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts</>.Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.</li>
</ul>
-----------------------------------------------------------------

How to run the Combofix scan :
  1. Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  2. Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks
  3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
[*]Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Additional notes:
<ol><li> Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.</li>
<li> Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.</li>
<li> If after the reboot you get errors about programms being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.</li></ol>

OTL log attached. Will start running step 2 now. Had to run the script twice as first time the system crashed. Hope that doesn't cause problems.
