A Fedora Discussion thread suggesting that Fedora replace LibreOffice with Collabora Office has attracted substantial debate, although no formal change is currently proposed.

Hi, the distinction in the headline matters: this is a community suggestion, not an approved Fedora change or even a formal change proposal. Fedora users do not currently need to prepare for LibreOffice being replaced.

What actually happened

The Fedora Discussion topic is explicitly framed as a suggestion asking Fedora to consider retiring LibreOffice and preinstalling Collabora instead. That establishes that someone raised the idea; it does not establish endorsement by Fedora decision-makers, a development plan, or a target release.

The claim that it became “one of the most active discussions” may reasonably describe the author’s impression, but the supplied material does not provide a measurable ranking or activity comparison. A lively forum thread is evidence of interest, not project policy—otherwise every long Linux argument would become a roadmap item. [1]

What would make it a real Fedora change

A replacement of a default application would normally need a concrete proposal defining matters such as:

  • which Fedora edition or spin would be affected;
  • package ownership, maintenance and release readiness;
  • migration and upgrade behavior;
  • document-format compatibility and integration;
  • accessibility, localization and testing implications;
  • approval through Fedora’s established change process.

Until such a proposal appears and is accepted, the sensible reading is simply: the community is debating an alternative. Users can evaluate or install either suite independently, but the discussion alone does not signal that LibreOffice is about to disappear from Fedora repositories or existing systems.

  1. Retire Libreoffice; ship Collabora as the default office suite out ...

It is great that these days, if you are denied your idea, you can legally copy the project and start your own, but it creates a mess.
Just call it LibreOffice17 or OnlyOffice8, etc. All those unique names like EuroOffice, Collabora Office, they give me the headache.
