Mozilla published Firefox Stable and Firefox ESR updates on September 20, 2022. Firefox 105 Stable and Firefox 102.3 ESR are the new versions that are now available.

The main improvement in Firefox 105 is the better handling of low-memory situations on Windows and Linux, resulting in fewer crashes.

Executive Summary
  • Firefox 105 and Firefox 102.3 ESR fix security issues.
  • Firefox 91 ESR is no longer supported. Firefox 91.x ESR will be upgraded to Firefox 102 ESR automatically.

Firefox 105.0 new features and improvements

Firefox 105 is a smaller release that is a bit light on new features. One of the main changes in Firefox 105 is that Mozilla managed to reduce the number of out-of-memory crashes of the browser on Windows significantly in the release.

The, rather simple sounding tweak, ensures that the browser's main process is not touched when the system runs out of memory. Instead, content processes are first on the chopping block to free up memory. Killing the main process kills the entire browser, while the termination of content processes crashes only the webpage open in it.

Similarly, Mozilla notes that it has improved the out-of-memory behavior of the Firefox browser on Linux as well:
Firefox is less likely to run out of memory on Linux and performs more efficiently for the rest of the system when memory runs low.

Other changes and fixes

  • The print preview dialog has an option to print only the current page directly from it.
  • On touch-based Windows devices, Firefox supports swipe to navigate touch gestures now (two fingers on a touchpad swiped left or right to perform history back or forward).
  • Improved touchpad scrolling on macOS.

Firefox 105.0.1 restores focus behavior on startup

Mozilla plans to launch a small update for the stable version of the organization's Firefox web browser later today that restores the original focus behavior on startup.
Mozilla notes in the official release notes: "Reverted focus behavior for new windows back to the content area instead of the address bar".

Additional information is available on Bugzilla.

Anyone else seeing occasional high RAM with this latest? Usually it's around 300 to 400MB, but sometimes spikes into the 1,400MB range for a few minutes. It isn't a problem. I've got plenty, but doesn't seem normal.

No, I did not notice (Firefox 105.1). I tried just now with 6 tabs open, incl. one playing music. Fluctuates betw. 1044-1100 MB, nothing higher for like a minute or so. Then again, there is 32 GB of memory installed on here.

Did notice however that it's using 10% of my gpu with only one tab open--this site only. Hmmm, will have to look that one up.

Edit: it seems to be some kind of interaction with Sandboxie and hardware acceleration (again). I'll keep playing with it and poss. post in SBIE thread about it. Thanks for inadvertently alerting me to this.

Firefox 105.0.2 fixes 5 different issues in the browser

Firefox 105.0.2 includes a single major fix and four lesser fixes. The main issue affects the loading of some sites in the browser's Safe Mode. Firefox users may enable Troubleshoot Mode under Menu > Help > Troubleshoot Mode to run the browser without extensions, themes and custom settings.

Designed to troubleshoot issues in the browser, it requires a restart before it becomes the active mode.

According to the bug report on Bugzilla, the loading of some sites stalls permanently in Troubleshoot Mode. The issue depends on the browser's font configuration and site content, according to Mozilla. Only Firefox instances with the shared font list disabled appear affected by the issue.

Firefox users may set gfx.e10s.font-list.shared to false in the advanced configuration to disable the shared font list.

Two of the fixed bugs address styling issues in the browser. The first issue affected the styling of sidebars of some add-ons in Private Browsing Mode, the second resolved issues with dynamic appearance changes.
  • Fixed a bug causing some dynamic appearance changes to appear when expected
  • Fixed a bug causing theme styling to not be properly applied to sidebars for some add-ons in Private Browsing Mode
The fourth bug fix addresses a poor contrast issue on Linux systems. Some menu items "with certain themes" had a poor contrast. The final fixed a scrollbar appearance issue on right-to-left locales.

The official release notes will be updated later today (if you are reading this on October 4, 2022).

Firefox 105.0.3 ready to be delivered via internal updater

Mozilla decided to block Avast's DLL files using Firefox's DLL blocklist file to stop the crashes from happening. An update to Firefox 105.0.3 is available already, which includes the new entry to the blocklist.
The case against 3rd party AV's....
