Malwarebytes uses telemetry for stuff like this:


Which turns up in other sites like Digital Trends, so yes, it's a form of "indirect" advertising. Dunno about its browser extension but the data is there, the online vendors know what to do with it profitably, and the average user doesn't. If you interact, like on forums, you will likely provide advertising for entities anyway. This place alone is a smorgasbord of software advertising. Trying to keep your digital footprint nonexistent is futile.
