Devin, the founder of a cryptocurrency startup based in San Francisco, woke up one day in February to the most bizarre phone call of his life.

The man on the other end, an FBI agent, told Devin that the seemingly legitimate software developer he'd hired the previous summer was a North Korean operative who'd sent tens of thousands of dollars of his salary to the country's authoritarian regime.

Stunned, Devin hung up and immediately cut the employee off from company accounts, he said.

"He was a good contributor," Devin lamented, puzzled by the man who had claimed to be Chinese and passed multiple rounds of interviews to get hired. (CNN is using a pseudonym for Devin to protect the identity of his company).

I just came across this article and thought I'd add to this posting, maybe to put a little more focus on North Korea and its seemingly increased desperation to support its citizenry while maintaining the image of a powerful military nation.

Overspending on military/nuclear technology without equal parts of supporting its people is pushing toward increasing criminality.

Its trade with the outside world devastated, North Korea is scrambling for American dollars and other hard currency, not just to feed its people but to finance Kim’s military and economic ambitions. It is smuggling coal and stealing cryptocurrency. It is also trying to squeeze every bit of cash from the public, selling smartphones and other imported goods to the moneyed class, as well as collecting “loyalty” donations in exchange for political favors.
