i have updaed my system
browsers chrome and firefox ( Chrome liked more ) with addons adblock and ghostery
download MBAM ( not premium )
download sandboxie its tough to understand ( still trying )

Updated windows all update important and optional

IE is a good browser, but lack of addons is a turn-off for me. For that reason, I recommend Firefox or Chrome with must have addons like adblockplus, ghostery, lastpass (for password management) and WOT.
Its also good to have some second opinion scanners like Malwarebytes and/or HitmanPro. Give your PC a scan every one/two week(s), and be assured your system is virus free.
Backing up your PC is a good measure, to save you from disaster. If you are not computer savvy, then atleast use Dropbox or similar cloud based backup service to backup ur important documents, pictures etc..

For backing up data (cloud storage) you can use Google Drive,OneDrive,MEGA,Dropbox, depends how much you want.
For web browsing i recommend Opera,Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome
For backing up data on external hard drive i recommend Aomei Backupper Standard
For Av i recommend 360 IS.
For on demand scanner i recommend Emsisoft Emergency Kit, Dr.Web Cure It! and MBAM (they're all free).
For PC maintenance i recommend Glary Utilities.

Thank you for sharing your configuration, Himani.:) Yesterday, I'd followed Staff Member Umbra Polaris' advice which I'll now pay forward to you!:D
"Internet Explorer is one of the safest browsers when you Enable Enhanced Protected Mode* under security".

Among the favorite free software I use daily, & learned about here, is a containment protection for your system called Sandboxie www.sandboxie.com It is like wrapping your computer in a waterproof barrier during a monsoonal rainstorm!:rolleyes:

Upgrade Internet Explorer to the latest version via Windows Update, or link below:

Check that Windows Updates are set to Automatically Update. You can review Optional updates, if required then install, else Ignore or Hide.

Apply a password on the Admin account. Optionally, restrict other non-essential users to a Standard User Account.

If you have available bandwidth / Internet usage allowance, you can Turn Off Smart Definitions in Norton. This will download Norton's full database. May be useful if the PC goes offline, but not necessarily required. - Just a thought mostly.

Unchecky to assist users and prevent unwanted toolbars or PUPs from installing.

Google Chrome, Opera, Firefox are good alternate browsers.

Google Chrome comes with built-in features and security in mind. Including it's own PDF reader for viewing, saving and printing to PDF, Flash Player (Pepperflash) for online videos and content. It also silently updates without interfering the user, and transfers all extensions and settings across to the new version seamlessly.

Mozilla Firefox, Opera and possibly Internet Explorer(?) may be able to use PDF.js extension to view, save and print PDF files.

If you own a Microsoft account, you can use it's online file storage (starting 7GB), OneDrive for storing copies of your documents. Sensitive files shouldn't be stored online, unless encrypted. OneDrive is also available for download on Windows 7 SP1.

Backup Software : AX64 Time Machine
Uninstaller : Revo Uninstaller Pro ( paid :p ) or Geek Uninstaller & iObit Uninstaller ( both of them are free :p )

  • Sandboxie's "sandbox" protects like a latex gloves or a plastic apron. So, in this way, everything is thus kept "outside" leaving your system "inside" clean. I did not understand this before either.:rolleyes:
  • Each time you open Chrome, & <click> on the Chrome short-cut, run Chrome in sandbox, you shall grow accustomed to the habit of protecting your system from changes.
  • Hint: Changes made in the Sandbox last only until you close (delete) the sandbox. I learned this when every extensions I'd added while updating Chrome,:eek: "disappeared". I'd puzzled:confused: over why Chrome went back to it's earlier version.:oops:
  • Consider that everything inside of a "sandbox" (like your browser) shall be rented only as long as you'll use it in a sandbox.o_O
  • This way, you can safely 'test drive' extensions, with no commitment, those which were installed while using Sandboxie.
  • Updates you wish to keep (such as Windows Updates) must be done without (outside of) the sandbox.
  • Downloads you'll keep must be recovered (IE: Recover to same file means allowing to keep.)
