The sandbox is a safe environment. Some use no AV and just run everything in programs like Sandboxie

Browsing habits would be visiting and downloading from warez sites, some porn sites, sites that are known for malicious content, ect.

You can install add ons to your browser such as adblock,Ghostery,WOT,Bitdefender Traffic light,HTTPS Everywhere that can help you make browsing safer

LastPass is a very good free password manager

Only thing I would change for a beginner/new user would be skip the Sandbox usage and Browser addons.

Also would make OS/Security software and Browsers updated as a top priority.

But exterminator20 has pointed all tips.

As for some guides already available here, Chiron's ones are best examples:

How to Harden Your Browser Against Malware and Privacy Concerns

Guide on How to Stay Safe While Online

How to Tell If A Website Is Dangerous

How To Avoid Spam

depends on what you mean when you say "HACKER", its a very widely used word nowadays.
so let me make it easier to understand what i mean:

-If by hacker you mean someone installing a kinda malware on your machine to steal your passwords and track your usage habits then its absolutely possible to defend your self. read and read and read and learn to the point that you wont need security softwares like AV's to find out whats running on your machine and if they are behaving maliciously (if thats a word :p)

-BUT if by hacker you mean someone taking control of your machine by exploiting a network-enabled program like your browser, then the answer is unfortunately is NO you cant protect yourself. but theres still a way, though a hard one. grab a unix-base OS and slim it to the bones and compile your own browser and stop every single process/service that listens on a port.

hope this helps :)

I should have said "legitimate hacker".

grab a unix-base OS and slim it to the bones and compile your own browser and stop every single process/service that listens on a port.

Yep. That would be tight.

How about watch what websites you go to, have an updated AV, plus an updated OS. Should give you some protection.

By using sniffers, honey pots, IDS, Router firewall/software firewall, web filters, AV, HIPS,BB, extensions to control Scripts, sandboxes,VPN's. By the time you get done monitoring all this you will have forgot why you got online to begin with :D

How can a user Protect himself from Hacker

by hacker i means a cyber-criminal trying to penetrate your system?

There is no way, unless you disconnect yourself from any networks.

but you can make their job more difficult:

- use a Firewalled router
- setup multiple "honeypot" machine in your network
- don't share any files across your network
- use forensic network monitoring tools
- disable any remote control services/features of your OS
- Encrypt your datas or partitions

well sometips from my side

1. always use https version of every site
2. hide your ip
3. use wireshark to sniff and capture ur own traffic and analyze it whether any suspicious activity is done or not.
4. use a standalone firewall
5. never share even a slight info with anyone coz social engineering tools are there to manipulate your pc
6. learn ethical hacking

1- i mean a router with hardware firewall (all of them has it now, but some people may not have one)

2- Check Honeypot on Google; to be simple it is a trap that divert the attention of the attacker doing a portscan (for open ports on your system) to a fake system.

3- dont share at all ^^

4- Windows turned them on by default

5- By using softwares like Truecrypt

1. I can't use HTTPS version of every site as ESET block the GMAIL on Firefox.
2. How to hide my IP.(Don't know)
3. I am not an Advanced user so i can't analyze any suspicious activity
4. Is there any standalone firewall (Please list them).
