Hi, I posted the thread below. Unfortunately I was unable to respond to the last post within 3 days (just) so it closed, but I still need help. I thought the problem had been resolved, but it appears not. I reset Chrome, rebooted and the Yahoo issue is still there. I deleted and reinstalled Chrome and the issue is still there. I delete Yahoo from the search engine list in Chrome, but it reappears. I have not yet run the removal tool from the link posted at 9:55 this morning. grateful for further help if possible. thanks.

Thanks. Results from step 12 attached as files as they were too big to paste.

I used the first option in the link you provided in Step 9:

Use the standard Windows removal method
Follow the steps below to remove your McAfee app using the standard Windows removal method.

Option 1 works for most customers, so try that first. If Option 1 fails, try Option 2. For both options, make sure that your PC is online during removal so your license status syncs with McAfee.

Click Search at the bottom left of your Windows desktop next to Start Start icon for Windows 10, 8.1, and 8.
In the search field, type Programs and Features. If you use Windows 8, you might need to type Add or Remove Programs.
Click Programs and Features, (or Add or Remove Programs).
In the list, right-click your McAfee app.
Click Uninstall, then follow the prompts.
Restart your PC.

Yes ...my mistake ..should have told you to use Option 2 ....

  1. Download the MCPR tool.
  2. Double-click MCPR.exe.
  3. If you see a security warning, click Yes, Continue, or Run (depending on your version of Windows):
  4. On the McAfee Software Removal screen:
    1. Click Next.
    2. Click Agree to accept the End User License Agreement (EULA).
  5. In the Security Validationscreen:
    1. Type the characters exactly as shown on your screen. Validation is case-sensitive.
    2. Click Next. This step prevents the accidental use of MCPR.

      MCNSZHX3DQABDCTIB6GMDWNNKPRU
  6. Wait for the MCPR tool to complete. This might take 20 minutes or more, depending on your type of PC.
  7. When you see Removal Complete, the MCPR tool has completed successfully. Restart your PC to complete the removal process.
IMPORTANT: When your PC restarts, it won't be protected from viruses and malware. Ensure that you reinstall your security software as soon as possible to remain protected.

What to do if cleanup is unsuccessful

  1. Restart your PC and run MCPR again.
  2. If you see Cleanup Unsuccessful again, contact McAfee Customer Service.

You can do it now so we can clean up the leftovers..! After which:

  • Right click on FRST and select Run as administrator
  • Copy/paste the following in the Search: box
Code:
Searchall:McAfee;McAfee WebAdvisor

  • Click Search Files button
  • When completed click OK and a Search.txt document will open on your desktop
  • Аttach the report in your reply. If the file is too large zip and upload it here.

In your next reply, please include:
  • Search report

Unfortunately still showing Yahoo in the search. On reflection, I'm not sure if it is a MacAfee issue. I installed then removed it (obviously only partially - doh) ages ago, but the Yahoo problem is more recent.

Let's do it like this..:

The following will remove the tools we used as well as reset system restore points:

KpRm by Kernel-panik
  • Download KpRm and save it to your Desktop (see here if you must use Chrome)
  • Note: If the file is detected as malware it is not and it is safe to download. The detection is a false positive.
  • Right click on the icon and select Run as administrator
  • Click Yes on the Disclaimer
  • Place a check mark in Delete Tools, Create Restore Point, and Delete in 7 days
  • Click Run
  • Click OK on All operations are completed
  • KpRm will delete itself from you Desktop and you can either save or remove the report that is generated
  • You are free to remove any other tools/reports still remaining
  • Please copy and paste its contents in your next reply.

After that:

Uninstall all browsers (Chrome and FireFox). Let only Edge work..!

Running Microsoft Edge Without Extensions and Checking Sync Status
  • Launch Edge
  • Type edge://settings/profiles/sync in the address bar and hit Enter
  • To prevent Edge from automatically restoring everything from the cloud, click Turn off sync.
  • Close Edge
  • Press the Windows Key + R at the same time
  • Copy and paste the below in the Run box:

Code:
msedge --disable-extensions

  • Click OK
  • Check the browser performance

After that:

Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop. --> IMPORTANT

If your antivirus software detects the tool as malicious, it’s safe to allow FRST to run. It is a false-positive detection.
If English is not your primary language, right click on FRST.exe/FRST64.exe and rename to FRSTEnglish.exe/FRST64English.exe

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
  • Double-click the FRST icon to run the tool. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button and wait for a while.
  • The scanner will produced two logs on your Desktop: FRST.txt and Addition.txt.
  • Please attach the content of these two logs in your next reply.

KpRm appeared to run successfully. Report pasted below.

Chrome uninstalled. In my version of Edge (Version 131.0.2903.112 (Official build) (64-bit)) there does not seem to be an option to "Turn Off Sync" but I toggled everything in the list to off.

Browser still shows Yahoo search.

FRST appeared to run successfully. Reports attached.

Booted in safe mode with networking OK. Yahoo still present. I think you are likely right about the installed program. Presumably if I reinstall Windows and then rebuild that should cover that? I should add that I really appreciate your advice and efforts here!
