The chrome browser on my window 11 laptop has started defaulting to yahoo as search engine even when instructed to do otherwise. The address briefly shows as search-great on its way to becoming google. I believe this is the search-great browser hijacker?

I have attempted all of the steps in How To Remove Any Browser Redirect Virus From Windows, Mac & Android but this has not made any difference

The same thing has happened to my chrome browser (same google profile) on my work laptop (windows 10). I have not been able to do the same steps on the work laptop because I do not have administrator access.
I also have an android phone, which seems to be operating normally

My windows 11 laptop is newish (one month old) and I had not got around to installing Norton on it until after this happened - rookie error, but Norton scan has not found the malware, so perhaps would not have made any difference in any case.

I would be grateful for your advice on clearing this from my personal laptop (windows 11) and whether I should keep my work laptop offline until our administrator can deal with it.

Appreciate it is Christmas Eve today, which may affect response times!

Hello and Merry Christmas..! :) Do you still need help..?

AV: Norton 360 (Enabled - Up to date) {343E1860-FD6F-AB8D-96E4-A5006AA98D2C}
AV: Malwarebytes (Enabled - Up to date) {0D452135-A081-B000-D6B6-132E52638543}
AV: Windows Defender (Disabled - Up to date) {D68DDC3A-831F-4fae-9E44-DA132C1ACF46}
AV: McAfee (Enabled - Up to date) {0BE13B34-492A-21C0-AE43-C1742279CCB6}
FW: McAfee (Disabled) {33DABA11-0345-2098-851C-6841DCAA8BCD}
FW: Norton 360 (Enabled) {0C059945-B700-AAD5-BDBB-0C35947ACA57}

Uninstall McAfee using the following instruction:

Next ....:

KpRm by Kernel-panik
  • Download KpRm and save it to your Desktop (see here if you must use Chrome)
  • Note: If the file is detected as malware it is not and it is safe to download. The detection is a false positive.
  • Right click on the icon and select Run as administrator
  • Click Yes on the Disclaimer
  • Place a check mark in Delete Tools, Create Restore Point, and Delete in 7 days
  • Click Run
  • Click OK on All operations are completed
  • KpRm will delete itself from you Desktop and you can either save or remove the report that is generated
  • You are free to remove any other tools/reports still remaining
  • Please copy and paste its contents in your next reply.

    Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop. --> IMPORTANT

    If your antivirus software detects the tool as malicious, it’s safe to allow FRST to run. It is a false-positive detection.
    If English is not your primary language, right click on FRST.exe/FRST64.exe and rename to FRSTEnglish.exe/FRST64English.exe

    Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
    • Double-click the FRST icon to run the tool. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button and wait for a while.
    • The scanner will produced two logs on your Desktop: FRST.txt and Addition.txt.
    • Please attach the content of these two logs in your next reply.
