Ikarus is an Austrian antivirus program, geared more toward professionals.
It’s relatively unknown to the general public but very well known in Austria.
The product is very easy to use—just a database, and that’s it!
Despite that, let’s see what it can do.
Interface :
As I mentioned in the introduction, IKARUS is a fairly simple antivirus program.
No HIPS, no defenses against attacks, no machine learning AI—nothing at all!
This can be a drawback because a database quickly becomes completely obsolete with the billions of pieces of malware that emerge every day. It just has an AMSI system to analyze network attacks.
Ikarus doesn’t even offer any settings!
Nevertheless, it’s very lightweight.
Malware URL : 7/9
Two URLs got through the protection, and one URL didn't work.
Other than that, Ikarus blocked the rest.
Malware Pack : 21 out of 69 threats remain
Even though Ikarus doesn't offer very advanced defenses, it managed to defend itself!
And thank goodness!
With AMSI, it managed to block several payloads that were being downloaded and even a DotNet attack!
Although this is a pleasant surprise, the machine is infected with malware that patches the CasPol.exe process.
Final scan :
Ikarus : 0
Symantec : 4
Emsisoft : 7
KVRT : There were some issues with the file; I couldn't use it, so I skipped it.
Final opinion:
The product holds its own. It has a relatively robust database, and its detection rates are high.
Although Ikarus has held its own, it lacks key defenses to counter certain unknown malware.
And that's really a shame...
However, it can provide excellent protection when paired with a good firewall or antimalware program.
