Intel has launched two new processors ahead of the MWC 2022, the D-2700 and the D-1700, which are based on Ice Lake-D. With up to 20 cores, the performance gains are huge over Hewitt Lake, which came out three years ago.

The new Xeon D processors are built on the Sunny Cove Core architecture. The chips offer a significant performance increase over the last generation, with up to 56 high-speed PCIe lanes and built-in support for up to 100Gb Ethernet. The D-1700 series is scalable from 4 to 10 cores and the D-2700 is scalable from 4 to 20 cores allowing the customers to tailor the solution according to their needs.

Over the previous generation, the new processors have around 2.4 times improvement for visual processing inference, up to 1.7 times improvement for complex networking workloads like 5G UPF, up to 1.8 times improvement for application delivery controller and security appliance use cases with TLS, and up to 1.56 times improvement for communication appliances.

What do these processors = in gigahertz Any idea ?

This article has some preliminary benchmarks and example clock speeds for a few parts. Intel hasn’t finalized the SKU list yet so reviewers are not allowed yet to post the full set. They’re slower than real Ice Lake Xeon’s but faster than the previous 1500 series Xeon D’s.

They also finally fully support QAT v3 which can be a huge deal if you’re building a network appliance or something similar that needs really fast SSL or AES. The previous generation didn’t support QAT and only had AES-NI.
