New Update KB5031894: First WinRE update for Windows 11 23H2; 22H2 gets it too

Microsoft released Windows 11 version 23H2 this week. And while the ISOs have been available since the announcement, the official Microsoft Media Creation Tool is still not able to download the update. When inquired about the matter, the company confirmed that it still needed "optimization" and would be ready next week.

Regardless, the company released dynamic updates that improve the compatibility of the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) for Windows 11 23H2. The updates also apply to 22H2 as well. This makes sense as the new feature update is mostly the same at the core system files level.

Alongside the 2023 update, Microsoft also released dynamic updates to improve the Windows Recovery (WinRE), as well as the Setup files, speaking of which, the Out of Box Experience (OOBE) was updated as well, though it was for 22H2 only. Now, the company has released a couple of them to optimize for 23H2 as well.


The March OOBE update, for example, added a Shim to improve compatibility with Component Object Model (COM) objects. Meanwhile, the April OOBE update also addressed compatibility issues, but this time it was related to the registry.


With the latest OOBE update release though, Microsoft hasn't gone into any detail about what the new update brings as it has only mentioned that this is meant to improve the Windows 22H2 Out of box experience.

Microsoft completes improving Windows 11 23H2 Setup, WinRE, and OOBE with latest update
