It appears that Brian Krebs has upset some powerful people with his relentless pursuit of key facts on vital security issues ,
and his excellent reporting of them .

This article at Arstechnica describes the DDoS attack on the Krebsonsecurity site earlier this week .
As far as I can see at isitdownrightnow the site is still down today.

In my opinion , Brian Krebs is one of the good guys , and deserves plenty of support from anyone concerned with computer security ,
and even more importantly , the right to free speech .

By the way , can anyone else get Krebsonsecurity right now ?
Maybe it has moved .

It's just down now. What a shame. No indication on his Facebook that he has found a workaround.

Best wishes to Brian!

The latest on this is that the attack was way bigger than originally thought .

This article at the "thewhir" reports that Akamai will no longer host Krebsonsecurity , and why .

An absolutely massive DDoS attack that reached 665 Gbps in size has hit the website of a prominent cybersecurity journalist, forcing Akamai to drop Brian Krebs’ website, Krebs on Security, from its Prolexic DDoS mitigation service.

Huge DDoS attacks have been seen across the hosting industry this week, reportedly hitting OVH and Cogent, which to Krebs suggests that “whoever built this DDoS cannon has been testing it.” At the time of publication, Krebs on Security remains offline.

In a strange twist of fate , we were discussing a very similar scenario here at MalwareTips only last Tuesday.

" Spooky " , as Dame Edna likes to say .

665 GIGABITS PER SECOND!?!?!?

o_O

Yes indeed .... I had to read it twice !

A DDoS attack on a scale never seen before .

Look at what Brian Krebs says in the quote-box of post #4 , above ^^ .
“whoever built this DDoS cannon has been testing it.”

And then look at what was reported from Bruce Schneier here at MT , in this thread from Tuesday ( post #1 ) .

Merely a coincidence ?

I seriously doubt it .

All this apparently because a couple of crooks got arrested in Israel. I never knew cyber-criminals had this level of power. It is indeed frightening for freedom of speech.

That is a good point.
And the more detail I read , the more I'm starting to doubt that it was cyber-criminals .

So what do you think?

I'm thinking back to this thread , from last week , and the possible involvement of a nation state .
Although I expressed doubts about the story then, I am having second thoughts because of the sheer
magnitude of the Krebs attack .

vDOS were already known to be DDoS "gun-slingers" for hire , but never before on this scale.
