IMHO, I don't find OnlyOffice very good, for me its glitchy, looks good though, the best I've found & its not free is Softmaker NX, I much prefer it to 365, ... I tried LibreOffice yesterday (again) out of interest after reading this thread, it really is horrible,

I started using LibreOffice years ago, Linux & windows, and it does what I need it to do, so for me it has been perfectly fine, but I have not compared to the others you're discussing. In Fedora I sometimes use Gnumeric spreadsheet, but not enough to have an opinion either way. But I read this thread with interest.

I have reinstalled the latest version after the hype; the same clunky note taking app; cannot rely on more than note taking or reading docx and pptx created by MS Office.

I'm sorry it's crap, if it wasn't on by default for every Linux distro itt would be vaporware. They have had 15 years and they can't get DOCX or DOC compatibility right.

Sadly we have zero alternatives for MS and probably never will.

Maybe, for true/flawless compatibility. OnlyOffice is pretty close though, and it's free. Oh, and the UI is MUCH better than LibreOffice.

I don't know what some users' real issues with LibreOffice are, given that others use it to write entire books and never need Microsoft Office for their work.

It has a word processor like Microsoft Office, but it doesn't have cloud storage like OneDrive, as it only works offline.

Do you think Microsoft really wants other office software to be compatible with its format? Too many times, when open-source office suites achieve compatibility with Microsoft Office, Microsoft immediately changes the format.

In what way, I haven't used Microsoft Office for a long time? You should be able to as far as saving the files to a created OneDrive Folder. I do it with Google Drive, it syncs both ways with my Google Drive folder, the cloud and my LibreOffice app documents. I just initially have to click to "save as", to my Drive folder.

Their version of Word, is Create: Writer Document.

No one can compete with the resources of MS; the more wise decision is to focus on a simple, stable, usable suite with less advanced features.
You can deprive MS of a siginicant cut of customers who do not need advanced features this way.

Agree; tried both.
MS online is laggy.
But I still prefer an offline suite.
I have LibreOffice installed beside MS Office, instead of new Notepad, for my personal notes files, and as an emergency backup to view MS files if MS Office fails to launch for any reason.

LibreOffice 26.8 has had the strongest first week of any release in the project’s history, surpassing 1 million downloads just seven days after launch.

According to The Document Foundation, the release was downloaded 1,031,162 times from LibreOffice’s official download page in its first week. Even more impressive, this number doesn’t include the many Linux users who got LibreOffice 26.8 through their distribution’s package repositories.

But the most interesting part came immediately afterward. Just one day after publishing those record download figures, TDF followed up with a post carrying a very direct title: “Yes, no AI is now a feature.” The wording leaves little room for interpretation about how the project wants to position its current approach to artificial intelligence.
