Well, I am going to be honest. Windows still is the best for Gaming and Linux is the best for everything else. The productivity that I have in Linux is no near Windows! but let's be honest... Microsoft has created a monopoly for PC games and they know that many of their customers are using Windows for gaming (including myself). The Linux distro that you choose is the most important factor because it will make you love or hate Linux. If you would like to go with Linux I would highly recommend to choose one with SUPPORT. Based on my experience at the moment we have only two great options: 1- ZorinOS Pro 2- System76 hardware (POP_OS) System76 only supports those who have bought their own hardware therefore, if you are not willing to spend 1K plus on such a hardware (which is not bad actually when you look at their specs, go for ZorinOS (39 Euros). Zorin is nice, supports FlatHub AND Snap software repos and it provides several desktop designs ... MacOS, Win10 and even Win11 -like desktops. I would never recommend Virtual machines because you will never be able to use the full power of your hardware and it is basically a waste of your resources. Spending a little more money on an Extra M2 or a SSD which nowadays costs nothing (compared to what we spend going out one weekend with friends) and making a dual-boot PC is the best solution. This is what I do personally. I even installed (Legit) office 2016 on my ZorinOS although I am using OnlyOffice for majority of my needs and use MS Office just for the complex Word and PowerPoint files.
