So true that Mac OS X has users that have a false sense of security, not only allowing malware to infect their systems but also other windows systems where the Mac acts as a conduit.

Firewall is off by default, the user ignores the Gatekeeper warnings, XProtect can be gone around even by renaming the file.

Apple has to do something as well as Mac users.

and they still didn't do anything to secure their macs. Average mac user says to me "i don't need any AV (or other security suite) because I'm a mac user" :p

Its a time to improve the full concept of Mac built in security measures, those features are easily taken for granted without providing a big importance like those introduction on Windows' recent OS.

No different to Windows 7-10 users. Disable Windows Defender, ignore UAC warnings, using Admin account or shared PC with non-password protected Admin account.

Microsoft has to do something as well as Windows users.
