Microsoft 365 Roadmap Weekly: Teams adds new chat improvements for Town Hall and more
We missed a week of updates to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap website last weekend. Things are slowly getting back to normal, so let's look at the updates on the site from the past seven days.

  • This feature will also be added to Outlook at some point.
  • On the desktop and Mac platforms in November, Teams will get some extra security features.
  • In January 2025, all Teams platforms will get another security-related feature for meeting organizers.
  • The roadmap also had some new entries for Outlook users. In November, the Outlook mobile apps will get two new new features. One will help with receipts in emails.
  • The other new mobile Outlook feature is for Copilot Business Chat users.

Microsoft 365 Roadmap Weekly: Outlook will get better mail merge features and more
Welcome again to our weekly look back at the Microsoft 365 Roadmap website as we check out some new entries. This week there are some new features on the site that it says will be added to the Outlook email client. We have already reported on some upcoming features this past week like Outlook themes generated by AI via Copilot, and that a previously announced offline email sync feature would become available by the end of December in preview.

Microsoft 365 Roadmap Weekly: Countdown timers in Teams, spellcheck in Outlook and more
It's been a while since we've done one of these, but the Microsoft 365 roadmap site never sleeps. This week brings several notable updates, especially for Teams users, with a significant number of features targeting a July 2025 general availability.

First up, Teams meetings are set to become a bit more intelligent. Copilot within these meetings will soon gain the ability to search the web and also analyze your work files and contacts. This enhancement is slated for general availability in July 2025. Speaking of meeting efficiency, for those sessions that stretch endlessly, a new countdown timer is also coming to Teams meetings in July. Any participant can initiate a timer, and its colors will change as zero hour approaches.

Accessibility in Teams meetings is also receiving a significant and much-needed improvement for sign language users. By July, interpreters will be clearly identified, and deaf or hard-of-hearing participants using sign language will be automatically spotlighted as active speakers, ensuring their contributions are seen alongside spoken ones.

For organizations with specific jargon, tenant administrators will be able to upload a Custom Dictionary through the M365 Admin Portal by July. This should improve the accuracy of Teams meeting transcripts and Copilot's understanding of company-specific terms.

Beyond meetings, Teams users on mobile are not forgotten. Next month should see the arrival of custom ringtones and the ability to set specific alert behaviors for assigned line keys. Then, in July, Copilot support will extend to 1:1 and group calls on Teams phone devices, alongside intelligent suggestions for call transfers based on your recent activity. For those of us who juggle multiple chats and apps, the ability to open Teams' apps like Chat and Calls in separate windows, also slated for July.

Finally, Outlook gets a couple of updates. Automatic spellcheck and grammar assistance, core Editor functions, are finally rolling out in next month. It's a bit surprising this was not standard already, but its arrival is welcome. Users will also find it easier to insert graphics like emoji and stock photos from the ribbon, an update planned for July. Microsoft is also making it easier to "keep your inbox clean," so soon, when you report an email as junk, you may also get an option to unsubscribe. This feature is set to begin rolling out next month as well.

Microsoft 365 Roadmap Weekly: New features for the new Outlook, Copilot updates and more
This week, Microsoft added a slew of new entries to the public Microsoft 365 Roadmap, including plans for Teams, the new Outlook, and, of course, Copilot and Copilot Chat.

Starting with Outlook, three practical updates are headed for the new Outlook for Windows client. First up, you'll finally be able to add attachments to emails while you are offline, a basic function that has been sorely missed. The remaining two features are slated for August. One will let you create a rule that specifically triggers a desktop alert. The other adds a folder deletion warning. If you try to delete a folder on which an email rule depends, Outlook will stop you and prompt you to fix the rule first.

Like Google with Gemini, Microsoft continues to push Copilot deeper into its applications, with several updates planned for mid-2025. Later this month, Copilot will be able to give you a quick summary of recent changes and comments on a file right from the backstage view in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, before you even open the document. Also, Copilot Chat will get the ability to limit its responses to selected content sources, like specific SharePoint sites or files, which should make its answers more focused.

Next month, PowerPoint users will get two more Copilot tricks. You will be able to rewrite selected text using a custom natural language prompt and add entirely new topics to an existing presentation, with Copilot generating slides that match the existing look and feel. Edge is not left out, as its integrated Copilot Chat will soon be able to access content across multiple open tabs, not just the active one, with that update scheduled for August.

Finally, for organizations that heavily use Teams Rooms Pro on Windows, an August update will allow for simultaneous town hall and webinar views. This will keep the presenter's backstage controls, like green room and backroom chat, hidden from the main audience display in the room.
