Microsoft is continuing to expand dark mode support in Windows 11, including older system components, but has not provided a specific timeline. According to Marcus Ash, the head of Windows Design and Research, the company is actively working to bring dark mode to more areas of Windows 11, such as legacy system interfaces.

The update was shared in response to user feedback and indicates that improvements are ongoing but not yet complete. Microsoft has not announced when full dark mode coverage will be available, and some core system tools still do not support it.

Microsoft has been improving dark mode in Windows 11 for a while, but full coverage is still incomplete.

What this likely means

  • Some newer parts of Windows 11 already support dark mode quite well.
  • Several older or legacy components still use older UI frameworks, so they do not match the rest of the system.
  • If Microsoft says it is “actively working” on this, that suggests continued gradual updates rather than one big switch.
  • Without an official timeline, there is no reliable way to say when those remaining areas will be updated.

Why it takes time

Legacy Windows components are often tied to older control panels, dialogs, MMC snap-ins, and system tools that were not originally designed with modern theming in mind. Extending dark mode to those areas is usually more complicated than changing the main Settings app or File Explorer.

Practical takeaway

If someone is expecting complete visual consistency across all of Windows 11, that is still not here yet. The direction is clear, but rollout appears incremental and Microsoft has not confirmed a completion date.

Conclusion

So the report sounds plausible, but the important part is the limitation: Microsoft appears to be continuing the work, not finishing it anytime immediately.

This is a great step forward. Microsoft extending dark mode to legacy interfaces brings much-needed consistency and comfort to the system. After all, a good user experience also means a more uniform and less eye-straining environment.

Finally, we can say that even the old Control Panel is getting with the program… and it won't blind us anymore like opening the fridge door in the middle of the night.🌑 🖥️ ❄️

How about introducing dark mode into window backup then? I have MSA, sync enabled, yet dark mode is never enabled after a clean install. It is extremely annoying.
