Here is how you can try out Microsoft Edge's new dark mode:
  1. Open and update Edge Canary
  2. Head over to the settings menu
  3. Select ''Dark mode'' option under the ''Appearance'' section

  • Microsoft is testing a new option in Edge called "Save screenshot of site for History" in the Dev and Canary Channels.
  • The feature is designed to take screenshots of all the sites you visit while browsing the web and saves them in History for future reference and use.
  • It's optional and disabled by default.
  • This functionality is already available through a different toggle within Edge, but Microsoft is testing another way to control it.

Microsoft Edge may soon get on-device encryption for passwords and auto-verify CAPTCHAs
Apparently Edge for Android will soon support "On-device encryption", the option already appears in Settings>Account>Passwords but it still doesn't work, this feature is not available in the desktop version yet:https://t.co/BsVMlpGhnu pic.twitter.com/mJzRXRN5gN

Currently, auto-verify is only available on Microsoft Edge Canary and Dev builds on Android. There is no word on when the feature will be available on other devices including Microsoft Edge desktop apps.

Microsoft has released a new update for Edge insiders in the Dev Channel. Although Version 117.0.2045.1 does not contain new features or major changes, it fixes crashes when interacting with the browser's sidebar, improves Workspaces, and resolves bugs related to F12 Dev Tools.

Version 117.0.2045.12: August 29, 2023

Fixed various bugs and performance issues.

Announcement: Deprecating the unload event

The Google Chrome team plans to deprecate the unload event starting in Chrome version 117. The deprecation will occur by gradually changing the default so unload handlers stop firing on pages unless a page explicitly opts in to re-enable them. For more information, see Deprecating the unload event - Chrome Developers, and Google Groups - Conversations.

While we haven't yet finalized the deprecation schedule, we anticipate that Microsoft Edge will follow Chrome's schedule with a possible delay of a release or two. If you're interested in testing with Microsoft Edge starting in version 118, the ForcePermissionPolicyUnloadDefaultEnabled policy will be available or you can use the instructions documented at Disable unload handlers by default and add Permissions-Policy to opt-in to enabling them.

WebView2 will support both the permissions policy and the enterprise policy but won't be impacted by the gradual rollout in Microsoft Edge. We expect WebView2 will switch defaults when the roll out reaches 100% of page loads.

Microsoft Edge developers are working on a redesigned password manager for the browser. Future updates will move it to the new Wallet section and introduce a few extra options to make password management easier and more convenient.

The most notable additions include the option to categorize your passwords and add notes. When saving or creating a password, Microsoft Edge will let you select a category: business, email, entertainment, finance, games, news, shopping, social media, sports, tech, travel, utilities, and others. Sadly, the current Wallet version in Microsoft Edge Canary does not support custom categories, so users must pick one from 14 prebuilt variants (via).

A few months ago, Microsoft introduced the Split Screen feature for Edge, allowing users to display two websites side-by-side in a single browser window. Split Screen is available for all users in the stable channel, and you can invoke it using a dedicated button on the toolbar or pressing Ctrl + Shift + 2. Soon, the feature will get a much-needed improvement in the form of a new vertical layout.

As spotted by an X (formerly Twitter) user, the latest Canary builds let you select one of two layouts: horizontal with webpages side-by-side and vertical with stacked tabs. You can also switch between them on the go by clicking a three-dot button and resize them by dragging a divider.
