You can now drag and drop tabs in Edge Canary to enable Split Screen
Microsoft is working on a new method to invoke Edge Split Screen, a feature that lets you display two tabs in one browser window. One of the recent Canary updates introduced drag-and-drop support, allowing you to enter Split Screen more intuitively, similar to how you arrange app Windows using the Snap feature.

Here is a GIF showing the new feature in action:

Edge Canary can now close itself automatically to install available updates
The latest Microsoft Edge Canary release introduced a new update-related feature that allows the browser to close itself automatically to install available updates. Microsoft says the change will let users get new browser versions and features faster.

The new toggle is available in Microsoft Edge Canary 120.0.2197.0 or later (head to edge://settings/help to force-install the latest update). You can find it by heading to Settings > Privacy, Search, and Services > Security > Get the latest Microsoft Edge updates faster.

Although letting Edge restart and update itself automatically might sound sketchy, Microsoft implemented a few safeguards, such as automatic tab restore and idle detection. The latter will ensure Edge is not interrupting your work to install a new update. Besides, the new "Get the latest Microsoft Edge updates faster" option is turned off by default.

You can share your thoughts about the new feature using the feedback buttons next to the toggle. Alternatively, press Alt + Shift + I and fill in the blanks. Feedback from customers may help the company adjust the feature or ditch without releasing it to the public.

In addition to the new update tools, Microsoft is working on personalization and productivity-related changes in Edge. Those include the ability to enable the Mica material and create custom themes, new Split Screen layouts and gestures, an improved password manager, and more.

Microsoft Edge Canary is available on Windows 10, Windows 11, macOS, Linux, and Android. You can download the browser from the official website. Remember that Microsoft frequently updates Edge Canary two times per day, and those updates can often bring significant instabilities, crashes, and bugs.

Microsoft is working on an interesting change for its browser: "spawning" a new tab instead of shutting down the browser when you close the last tab. As spotted by users, the new behavior is rolling out gradually to Edge Insiders in the Dev and Canary Channel. However, you can also force-enable it using a short command.

Creating a new tab instead of closing the browser is not a new concept. Opera, Firefox, and other browsers allow you to customize this behavior in settings. A few months before the launch of Edge Chromium, some users complained about the lack of that option in Edge. Four years later, Microsoft seems to be ready to change its mind.

Microsoft Edge Super Drag and Drop makes opening links in new tabs easier
Microsoft has added a neat new feature for you to try in Edge Dev and Canary. Dubbed "Super Drag and Drop" (that is right, not just a better drag-and-drop, but super drag-and-drop), it makes opening links and searching for something in a new tab much easier (via Deskmodder).

Did you know that Microsoft Edge has a built-in screenshot tool you can use to capture and annotate anything on your screen? This handy utility will soon get a major feature boost with Copilot integration, optical character recognition (OCR or text extractor), and the ability to quickly look for something on the capture using Bing.

Although the screenshot tool is available in the Stable Channel, the new features are rolling out gradually to Edge Insiders in the Canary Channel.

Microsoft Edge 124.0.2478.6 is out in the Dev Channel with various improvements
Microsoft Edge Insiders have a new feature update to test in the Dev Channel. Version 124.0.2478.6 is now available for download with fixes for crashes, bugs, and other instabilities. Sadly, there are no new features in today's release.
If you want to participate in the Edge Insider program on your Windows PC or Mac, head to the official Edge Insider website. Alternatively, go to edge://settings/help and click "Learn more" in the Microsoft Edge Insider section.

Microsoft Edge 124 is expected in the Stable Channel next month. Before that, Microsoft will re-release version 123, which was recently pulled to "ensure compatibility with certain enterprise configuration related to storage of user profile data." The update should be back today, March 27.

Microsoft Edge will let you limit how much RAM it consumes
Microsoft is preparing a neat new feature for its browser. Those unhappy with how much RAM Microsoft Edge consumes will be glad to hear that the company is testing a built-in memory limiter to prevent the browser from exceeding user-defined limits.

The new RAM controls were spotted in Edge Canary by @Leopeva64 on X (formerly Twitter). Microsoft plans to let customers limit the memory use while playing games (the browser can automatically detect that) or always. A special slider will allow you to specify how much memory Edge should not exceed. You will also be able to check RAM consumption and limits in the "Browser essential" flyout.

Microsoft Edge has a built-in screenshot utility that lets you capture anything in your browser's window, annotate, and save or share. A future update for the Edge browser will introduce a reworked version of the screenshot feature, giving you more tools for taking and editing screen captures.

As spotted by Deskmodder, recent Canary builds in the Edge Insider program introduced feature IDs that allow you to turn on the reworked screenshot tool. After toggling it on, Edge will let you capture anything on your display, not just in the current browser window as it is in the stable release. Additional features in the updated tool include the ability to add shapes, pixelate sensitive data, and more.

Microsoft is working on revamped appearance settings for Edge
Microsoft Edge 130 is currently available for testing in the Canary Channel. One of its hidden changes is a revamped appearance settings section that offers a more compact look compared with the current implementation.

The appearance section in the Stable version of Microsoft has large squared thumbnails for built-in themes. In the reworked variant, Microsoft suggests switching to a more subtle and compact selector with rounded previews.

Microsoft Edge’s new feature will “most aggressively” limit RAM on Windows 11
A few months back, Windows Latest covered Microsoft’s plan to include a RAM usage adjustment option in the Edge browser. Back then, it offered a slider to adjust the RAM usage limit for the browser. However, it could change to a drop-down list.

The new drop-down list design is available in the latest Canary build. Instead of the old “Control how much RAM Edge can use” option with the slider, the new build has a “Manage Edge’s RAM usage” option. There are five presets to choose from on our PC which has 16GB RAM:
  • No limit – Edge will use all the available memory if needed.
  • Minimal (8GB) – Edge will impose a maximum limit of 8GB, which is more than enough.
  • Moderate (6GB) – The browser will make do with 6GB, which is a decent size.
  • Aggressive (4GB) – Edge will not use more than 4GB RAM.
  • Most Aggressive (2GB) – Highly aggressive option that will curb the RAM usage to only 2GB.

Microsoft deprecates Crypto Wallet in Edge 129 Beta, raises supported OS on Mac to macOS 11
Microsoft Edge 129 is now available for final testing in the Beta Channel. The release is packed with bug fixes and small improvements. It also includes another change in Microsoft Edge compatibility and one deprecated feature that nobody liked.

Following the ditching of systems without SSE3 support (Edge no longer updates on those old Windows PCs), Microsoft raised the OS requirement for Mac users. Starting with Edge 129, macOS 11 is the minimum supported OS. Older releases are no longer supported.

As for deprecated features, Microsoft is dropping the CryptoWallet feature. No one knows why it was there in the first place, but it is now on its way out.

Edge 129 Beta contains all the fixes and improvements from Edge 129 Dev updates released over the last few weeks. If you want to check them out, use the following links below:
