This month, Microsoft has already released two emergency OOB or out-of-band updates to resolve a couple of major issues. The first one under KB5084597 was a security patch for a critical network vulnerability while the second one, KB5084897, was to fix broken Bluetooth connectivity. Those were on Windows 11 2024 LTSC.

Following those, today, Microsoft has released yet another OOB update this time for Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2 to fix an internet connectivity-related problem we reported on a few days back. Due to this new bug that was documented this week, Microsoft confirmed that MSA or Microsoft Account sign-in broke and as such affected users were not able to access Microsoft's free apps like Teams Free, OneDrive, Edge, Copilot, Excel, and Word as it led to "You'll need the Internet for this. It doesn't look like you're connected to the Internet" error message.

With today's new OOB update under KB5085516 (builds 26200.8039 on 25H2 and 26100.8039 on 24H2), Microsoft has resolved this bug.
To get the update, go to the Settings page via the Start menu, then Update & Security > Windows Update. Here, you will find KB5085516 under Check for Optional Updates.

That matches the typical pattern for Microsoft out-of-band fixes: they are released outside the normal Patch Tuesday schedule to address a specific regression or urgent issue.

What this update appears to fix

KB5085516 is being reported as an emergency update for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 that resolves a Microsoft Account sign-in/connectivity problem affecting some Microsoft services and apps, including:

  • OneDrive
  • Teams Free
  • Edge
  • Copilot
  • Excel
  • Word

The visible symptom was the misleading message that the device was not connected to the internet, even though the actual issue was tied to Microsoft Account access.

Important context

An out-of-band update like this is usually targeted. That means:

  • If a system is not affected by the specific bug, there may be no practical benefit to installing it immediately.
  • If a system is affected, installing the OOB update is usually the correct fix rather than trying random network resets or account workarounds.
  • These optional OOB patches can later be rolled into the next cumulative update.

Practical recommendation

For users on Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2:

  • If they are seeing Microsoft app sign-in failures or the false “no internet” error, installing KB5085516 is a sensible step.
  • If they are not experiencing the issue, they can reasonably wait for the next standard cumulative update unless Microsoft later changes the guidance.

Caution

As always with newly released emergency patches:

  • It is best to check the official Microsoft release notes for known issues and exact applicability.
  • Do not assume the update fixes unrelated internet problems.
  • If the problem continues after installation, the cause may be different and would need separate troubleshooting.

The main takeaway is that this looks like a regression fix for a specific Microsoft Account-related connectivity issue, not a general network repair update.
