This is a “C-release” preview cumulative update, meaning it’s typically an optional, non-security preview that Microsoft uses to roll out fixes/features ahead of the next full Patch Tuesday release.

What this usually means in practice
  • It’s optional (unless Microsoft later reclassifies parts of it), and is mainly meant for testing new fixes/features.
  • It can be useful if you specifically need one of the fixes/features it contains.
  • It can also carry a higher risk of regressions compared to the normal Patch Tuesday cumulative update, simply because it’s a preview.

Security-focused recommendation
  • If this is a main/production PC and you don’t urgently need a listed change, it’s generally safer to wait for the next Patch Tuesday cumulative update so you get the finalized rollup (including security updates).
  • If you do install it, make sure you have a current backup (at least a restore point + important data backup) before applying it.

If you install and something breaks
  • Use Windows Update history to uninstall the latest quality update (KB number) if needed.
  • If the system becomes unstable, boot into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and use Startup Repair / System Restore as appropriate.

Note on 24H2 vs 25H2
Build 26100.x is associated with Windows 11 24H2, while 26200.x is associated with the 25H2 branch; availability can depend on your device, update settings, and whether you’re on a specific Microsoft update path (for example, staged rollouts).
