Operating System: Windows XP -the OS willed be dropped from support in about a year. So before then I recommend upgrading.
Antivirus: Microsoft Security Essentials -would recommend AVG, Avast or Panda because MSE does not have that good protection.
On demand scanners: I recommend Malwarebytes AntiMalware, Emsisoft Emergency kit, and/or Hitman Pro (for scanning)
Add-ons: -I recommend Adblock plus, and WOT
Do you have a firewall, hips or another layer of protection?

Hello! Welcome to MT!

After looking at your config I hightly recommend these changes:

Operating System: If possible, I highly recommend that you upgrade to a more secure OS such as Windows 7 or Windows 8 as XP is now considered old with a so-so Firewall. Support for XP also ends very soon. Do you have any service packs installed for XP?

Real Time Protection: MSE is known to be poor in detection and lacks very needed prevention features to protect the system.
I Highly Recommend that you change. Since you are basic Here are some free Anti-Viruses to check out that are user-friendly:
Avast Free
Avira Free
AVG Free

Second-Opinion Scanners:
In this time of age on the internet, Its VERY Highly recommended to at least have one OD scanner on your computer. I say that every computer must have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as it has great detections, fast updates, and its just simply awesome! So I highly recommend that program.
Others I recommend to keep:
Hitman Pro
Emsisoft Emergency Kit

Web Browsing:
You have a good web browser but you can add some great Add-Ons and some web protection to keep you safe while browsing.
For Web Protection I recommend either:
McAfee Site Advisor (It improved A LOT!)
Bitdefender trafficlight

As for backup, Wait til our other user McLovin gets here.
However, Norton Ghost backup and recovery is what I use, Its paid but it gets the job done!

Other that all those, You should be good!

Thanks for replying, how do I upgrade windows
Tried AVG free before and it slowed my PC down i think it's still there somewhere, will try one of the others
Following instructions from here I used Malewarebytesanit-Malware and it's still showing on my desk top
Will add WOT I forgot to say I have ghostery
Think I may have firewall from Firefox.
Although I've used my computer for years as you can see I have no real knowledge. What a dumbo, think I've woeken up since catching a vrus though.

Stop under estimating yourself, you did well if you have already been able to get rid of the virus, not all basic users can follow instruction properly ;)
No one is born as an expert, its situation and needs which make people learn new things, you had a malware in your system so you learned how to get rid of that particular type :)
Its only that you need to be explained more than others and with time you will catch up.
Just feel free to ask here anything, everyone is nice they will explain it pretty vividly.

OK i now that was a lot of lecture :p

About firewall : Firefox don't provide you a firewall, i mean none of the Browsers like chrome or internet explorer provides firewall.
A firewall is something which intercepts the internet connection made by any application and as per the rules allow/disallow
with firewall you can easily see if there is any program which is not supposed to make internet connection is making one, then you can check if it is infected or not and then you can accordingly deal with it.
Windows has an inbuilt Firewall, XP's firewall is not considered good enough.
However, for a beginner i would recommend to look more before trying any Firewall applications
Just google terms if you dont understand or you can ask here for suggestions :D

Ah! Thanks for that I did follow the first set of instructions and got rid of the virus surprised myself:D then after that i've had loads of help and patience from Jack. I must say I'm pretty chuffed with it all:)
I will be learning a lot more from here and as I say being more careful in my browsing of loads of hairstyles, fashion, how to as well as well as more educational stuff. I find the internet a fascinating place you can find out anything.

by following your malware removal thread, i can evaluate your computer skill, not bad but you lack some principle knowledge, so you are restrained to some install & forget solutions.

First, you should consider to upgrade your OS if your computer and finances can afford it; buying Win7 or Win8 Pro ( Win8 will be really useful for you, since it has built-in malware protection, you will have almost nothing to add)

If not you have 2 choices:

1- free solution : Avast + Zone Alarm firewall
2- paid solutions: Norton IS, Avast IS, Panda Coud AV Pro (all have an AV + Firewall + web protection)

hope i helped you a bit ^^

Real-time protection: Microsft Essentals is good enough if your a person without a curious nature :D (though personally i dont like it :p) or you could use Avast Antivirus ( Avast AV ) why choose avast? well fistly it's FREE!!!! :D, secondly it's light on the system and it has a good detection rate.
Second-Opinion scanners: never scanned until I joined here - You can use Malwarebytes MB
or Hitman Pro Hitman Pro Why use these ? Well just simply because you wanna make usre your right like wen your lost somewhere and u ask 2-3 guys just to make sure your heading the right way :D
Primary Web Browser: firefox (cool browser though give chrome a shot as well :) )
Add-ons & Extensions:

Chrome : Adblock, WOT, Ghostery, Lastpass / Robofarm, etc.
Firefox :Adblock, Bitdefender Traffic Light, etc

Ok do the following
Install Avast Free Av+ Zone Alarm. Safest and easiest combo.
Upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows8. Windows8 upgrade costs 39.99$ so hurry as this offer closes in Jan.
Also get a sandbox like sandboxie.
To be safe scan all files before using them.
