The City of New Orleans, Louisiana has suffered a ransomware attack that has led to the shut down of the city's servers and computer, but the city states emergency services remain intact.
According to a press conference held by Mayor LaToya Cantrell, it was confirmed that the city was hit by a ransomware attack, but that no ransom demands have been found at this time.
Kim LaGrue, the city's Chief Information Officer, stated that the city first detected the attack at 5 AM when suspicious activity was detected on the network. By 8 AM, when workers started accessing their computers, the city detected an uptick of this suspicious activity and began actively investigating the situation.
Between 11-11:30 AM an outside agency confirmed that the city was under attack and the city engaged with Federal and State partners who have been helping them with active forensic and cyber investigations.

indeed, i'm amazed Ransomware are still a threat...
Agreed, inside job (maybe),corruption is rampant even in my industry (Construction), Its been mentioned here before, but once again, people get paid to protect , At least 10 % of the people on this site would do a better job maybe more, thanks for the post

Blame Microsoft to put default user account as admin account since decades and get developers used to code their softs for admin accounts.
Blame greedy CEOs to not purchase Windows Enterprise or hire qualified admin.
Blame lazy/ignorant admin to not setup SUA/SRP/Applocker.
Blame Employees to use their work computers for personal stuff.
Blame malware writers to take advantage of all the previous points.

I do not deny what you mentioned now.
But protection companies do not provide special programs to counter ransomware
Rather, it is ninth to market costly endpoints.
I am not talking about traditional protection programs like avast, avira or kaspersky. I mean specific companies.
I have spoken to them many times, they only care about money, they don't care about the human condition
A malicious program may infect and encode a hospital computer how many people will die.
Thanks Umbra . :)

Ryuk Ransomware Likely Behind New Orleans Cyberattack:

The US is funding all kinds of stuff, it's hemmorhaging dollars and cents. Ransomware is like a divine gift--not only do you, the crooks, get lots of money but you get to stick it to the US in the spirit of your cause/s. "Hey, stupid, you allow this to happen." So better us to profit first and teach you a valuable lesson or three, stupid Americans.

This subject is getting old. Geez, just a few weeks ago, several neighboring Louisiana parishes got hit--multiple times. But no! N'awlins has to learn the hard way....maybe. Maybe not. Yyyyyawwwnnnn. Snooze.

Remember the days before Uber?
You got into a cab, the meter started running, and you were never sure how much you would spend until you reached your destination.
The cleanup costs following a ransomware attack are kind of like that.
And the meter is still running in New Orleans. A bright yellow notice on the city's website makes that clear.
New Orleans Ransomware Attack Costs Climb to $7 Million
