For years Norton has only updated the interface, since it was held hostage by Symantec. No new technologies, just button changes and additional functionality like browser and game acceleration. Now Norton will evolve and change with Avast, which passes both professional and amateur tests perfectly. Is that a bad thing? The years of stagnation are over. We will finally see some movement. I personally don't trust products that don't change for years. Now I'm on the contrary thinking of trying to go back to Norton. I'm waiting for the gamer version update, I wonder what that will look like and if it will be at all.

Well, it looks like the inevitable has finally occured, although what I remember is that they were initially going to use the Avira engine in Norton. Why/how this changed, perhaps the patent issues had something to do with that.

Avira has no patents, patent search reveals they own 2 patents and this is why their overall evaluation was very low too.

The avira engines and technologies are not advanced enough to replace the Symantec technologies. Avast is a better contender.

They did not get rid of intrusion prevention signatures it's still very much apart of the product. If anything norton is much stronger then before to many jumped the gun and assumed, they took everything out. however, they did take Norton power eraser out not sure why but have suggested it be put back in.
