Hong Kong, it seems, is bustling with GPU activity as recently there was a seize of illegal GPUs being smuggled and today a bunch of upcoming Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti MSI Ventus models were spotted.

Tech site HKEPC has reported that it has spotted MSI Ventus models of Nvidia's upcoming RTX 3080 Ti 12GB graphics cards. The graphics cards were seen during the process of transit as they are reportedly being transported from Hong Kong and destined for US retail stores and such. This is in preparation of the 3080 Ti's reported launch next month. The site adds that Nvidia is pricing the RTX 3080 Ti at $999 which is the same as AMD's 16GB Radeon RX 6900 XT.

A report emerged from Hong Kong-based site HKEPC last week that said Nvidia's upcoming GeForce RTX 3080 Ti will be allegedly be priced at $999 and launch sometime next month in May. Today, the same site has said that it has now obtained the exact date of the launch. The site says that it received this information courtesy of the Taiwan-based AIB vendors who will apparently be launching their own variants on the 26th of the month and the official launch of RTX 3080 Ti will be a day before that on May 25.

You're better off buying a pre-built that includes these new GPUs than to buy anywhere else. Just the extra parts you could use in the future alone is a better deal than paying a premium just for a single GPU.

Forgive my ignorance but why's that? Does the shop effectively lock in what they're going to charge at the time they receive the GPU?

I'm not sure what you mean.

All I'm saying is that the pricing of a single GPU is nearly the same as buying a pre-built system that is complete with all components.
Gotcha.

What I was trying to ask (poorly) was whether shops might be less likely to increase the cost of new GPUs in a prebuilt system compared to selling them separately

Yes the price and volume they get parts at are contracted out in advance. This was also true in the GTX 1080 cryptocurrency craze days. Basically they are fairly insulated from the consumer price craziness, at least in the medium term. If this lasts long enough that may change.

Nvidia today teased a GeForce event for May 31 on Twitter, which will be live-streamed on YouTube and Twitch. While the teaser does not provide anything in the way of information on what is expected, the firm is likely gearing up the launch of the RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3070 Ti graphics cards – models that have been spotted in multiple leaks in the recent past.

At Computex today, as the company had promised, Nvidia has announced its newest GeForce RTX offerings, the RTX 3080 Ti and the RTX 3070 Ti GPUs. The former will be available to purchase worldwide in a couple of days on June 3 and it is priced at $1,199, which is 20% higher than what rumors had earlier suggested.

For this asking price, the new RTX 3080 Ti, Nvidia says, delivers twice the performance of the GTX 1080 Ti even in traditional rasterization situations. The gap naturally extends further when newer technologies like DLSS or real-time ray tracing are added into the mix.
