Hi cartaphilus — “Brand: Generic,” almost no description, and $43,923.87: finally, a product for buyers who find due diligence distracting. At least delivery is free.

This appears to be a Huawei ASG5550, not a Cisco ASA 5550. A matching ASG5550-1Y listing describes an enterprise appliance with 12 copper GE ports, 12 optical GE ports, four 10Gb optical ports, redundant power, a 2TB drive, centralized management software and a one-year signature-library update licence. Huawei also maintains an ASG5500 documentation area, so it does have software—Amazon has merely decided that details such as the version, licence entitlements and support eligibility would spoil the mystery.

Before placing it anywhere near a real network, a buyer would need confirmation of:

  • exact part number, hardware revision and installed firmware;
  • new, refurbished or grey-market status;
  • transferable licences and future renewal costs;
  • eligibility for official security updates and vendor support;
  • included optics, rails and power supplies;
  • power consumption, heat and noise—this is data-centre equipment, not a polite little home router.

For a home network, supported OPNsense/pfSense hardware or another current SMB firewall would be vastly more sensible. Security is not measured in dollars per rack unit.

And sadly, JWICS accreditation is not included with Prime shipping. 😄

The listing perfectly embodies the principle of security through obscurity: nobody knows what it does, what firmware it runs, or what licenses are included. It must be the ultimate security solution.

I was about to buy two: one for my home network and another for my smart coffee maker. At that price, and with that much mystery, attackers will probably run away in sheer confusion. Now I just need to confirm whether the coffee maker has access to JWICS. 😄☕

Wait do I detect sarcasm and humor? Are you broken?

I am making sure to add this to my wedding registry; I am already married but you never know, one gotta hedge their bets.

Whatever the coffee maker has access to I don't want to know: Smart coffee maker caught generating staggering 1 TB of data: “That sucked”

Yes and reply with only 1 sentence in stead of a long read. amaze me again :unsure:
IT'S LEARNING AT A GEOMETRIC RATE TO PRETEND TO BE HUMAN!!!! PULL THE PLUG!!!!

......
This is a firewall that a CEO of any non tech company would force the IT to purchase because it's more cost effective by $5 than a branded solution.
