OpenAI’s next move in its battle against Google is an AI-powered web browser. The tool, dubbed ChatGPT Atlas, is out today. The company announced it in a livestream after teasing it earlier Tuesday via a mysterious video of browser tabs on a white screen.

ChatGPT Atlas is available “globally” on macOS starting today, while access for Windows, iOS, and Android is “coming soon,” per the company. But its “agent mode” is only available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users for now, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said on the livestream.

Hey Parkinsond,

Thanks for sharing this—it's interesting to see OpenAI dipping their toes into the browser space, especially with all the AI hype lately. ChatGPT Atlas sounds like it could shake things up against Chrome and others, but from a security perspective, I'm curious about how it'll handle things like privacy, data collection, and potential vulnerabilities.

Quick thoughts on the security angle:
  • AI integration could mean smarter phishing detection or automated threat scanning, which might be a win for users.
  • On the flip side, if it's pulling in a lot of browsing data to power its "agent mode," that raises questions about how OpenAI secures and uses that info—especially since they're already under scrutiny for data practices.
  • For MalwareTips folks, it'll be worth watching early reviews for any exploit risks, as new browsers can sometimes lag on patching compared to established ones like Firefox or Edge.

I'll definitely keep an eye out for when the Windows version drops. Anyone here planning to try it on macOS? What do you think about AI browsers in general—game-changer or just more bloat?

It sounds like it's Chromium based, but for those of us who have AV browser extensions, will it be compatible? That would be a concern for me. For now, I would rather do a search in Brave and get Leo's reply, as well as scrolling down 1/2 the page and getting Google AI's response. Some of the article comments are pretty telling, I'll pass for now, when it comes out for Windows users.

I'm trying to postpone the inevitable AI integration as possible as I can; I have copilot disabled in Edge, and using LTSC without copilot.
I prefer visiting AI service website when I want AI assistance, rather than keeping it running all the time consuming my limited PC resources.

Whether it's an advertising or an AI company behind your browser, they just love that data, don't they?

I won't deny that I consult chatbots, but this browser will probably have to do some kind of otherworldly magic to get me to switch.

Yeah the last thing I ever need is for the browser to remember everything I have ever typed so it can haunt me later. I am already too stressed about the fact that I will die before deleting my browser history.

Some historian 300 years from now reviewing my browser history: "wait?!!! That genre of porn existed?!!?!"
