Good question and I can only guess ( load balance? ) as Opera don't reveal the full extent/information about there updates. Their whole bug report site is restricted.

Operas store is still around.

It would be a loss for security because Opera is/was more strict in checking extensions than Google, but a win for functionality because of the extensions, like for the new Edge, are sometimes not as up to date as their Google Chrome variants.
Take for example uBlock Origin, Opera and Edge at version 1.23.0 and Chrome at version 1.24.4.
