Occasionally I play games on PC (Windows 8.1), but I find the Keyboard / Mouse combination personally unusable for anything more than several minutes.

As I understand, the Xbox One controller is compatible with Windows, but is it worth buying (see above)?

According to this, I could use the Xbox One Wireless controller using any standard Micro-B USB cable?

I've never used a controller in any PC game so far, however I have tested and verified that it is possible to use them.
Particularly, the Xbox One controller is definitely compatible with all mainstream games, and partially compatible with at least 90% of the rest of the games.
If you are using Steam you can specifically check which games allow for controller input and to which extent ("Full controller support", "Partial controller support").

Hope this helps a bit. :P

I am the same, can't use a keyboard and mouse... It's because I have started gaming with consoles and prefer them personally. Worth buying, but an Xbox 360 OR Xbox One controller would work, depending on which you like the most :) Remember, it will not work without the drivers: Microsoft Accessories

P.S: The link is to the drivers needed for Xbox One controller.

(First paragraph is useless information about my gaming history, read second paragraph for useful information.)

Started on PC myself about a year earlier than consoles (around 2000 when I was actually allowed to touch one - 2001 for handhelds (Gameboy Color) and consoles (PS1)). Still I prefer controller because they work for more games types than keyboard and mouse. For FPS, controller and keyboard/mouse are the same for me. I always get the same results and find both no better than the other, so I use controller on console happily, and keyboard and mouse on PC happily. For racing, flying, etc, controller is far better for precision and control. For RTS and sidescrollers, I prefer keyboard and mouse so I'm kind of a mix. Playing games like Terraria for example on a controller would be painful (at least for me - so I just bought on Steam), while playing Need for Speed games would be painful on keyboard and mouse so I buy it on Xbox. Couldn't live without my Xbox or PC. lol

Anyway I was easily able to play Euro Truck Simulator 2 with my Xbox One controller and it worked fantastically. On Windows 7 and 8, you'll need to have the driver, on Windows 10, it's already installed. For Xbox 360 controller, you need a wireless tuner (I think that's what it is called). For Xbox One, just connect your cable to your USB port (I believe Xbox One controller drivers install using Windows Update on 7 and 8 automatically or you can install drivers manually). Yes I'm talking about the wireless controller charger cable - after all that is how the Xbox One sends updates to the controller - a charge AND data is transmitted through it unlike the 360 wireless controller which only carries a charge for the batteries. There is a tuner if you want to use it wireless however but not necessary.

As for if it's worth buying... yes. Very worth it. Best controller I've ever used.

it was the opposite for me; when you play a FPS or RPG game like WOW , mouse and keyboard are far more precise (try play counter-strike with a controller, making headshots is a hell ). i guess it is a matter of habits ^^

Depends on the games you play, as I said I play occasionally and they're not AAA or popular games.

Thanks for the help. I will look to see if I can find the cheapest deal online.

@Huracan you can use the wired xbox 360 controller or the microsoft controller (wireless) that is essentially the same as the 360 but branded microsoft instead of xbox 360, and its wireless with the usb attachment.
You get most bang for your buck that way, as opposed to xbox one, unless you own the console.

Only games I use the controller are GTA alike games and some indy games. Did use it on Overwatch as well for a bit but in the end, traditional FPS I rather play keyboard and mouse.

Witcher 3 and alikes, work fine with or without controller. Controller is just a quality of life in PC gaming, granted ports of games are correctly ported and fully function on mouse and keyboard.
