;) Such as 'Real-time protection' - I also think of my secure search engines: Privatelee, DuckDuckGo .. and UltraSurf ('UltraSurf is a VPN program for Windows') - and common sense.
And SlimBoat sandboxed browser.

On-demand, I use also: MyDefrag, CCleaner, KCleaner, MRU-Blaster, TcpView, CurrPorts, Process Hacker v2.23, SumatraPDF, and some others.

Before the 'fatal click' on link not sure, I use first - online URL check: Quttera, FSecure Browsing Protection, TrendMicro SiteSafety, WAVE, URLVir, URLQuery, SiteTruth (Google version), IPduh, DNS-info.cz, Sleuth online version,
Robtex, Webutation, WebPageTest, Brightcloud, Web-sniffer, StopBadware, UnmaskScript (yes, I use also IE8 native tools), SameIP, Bad-Neighborhood ..
tracerts (WhatIsMyIPAddress.com, Domaintools.com, centralops.net ..)
- and some Web screen-shot online services: ShotBot.fr, loads.in, IE NetRenderer, shrinktheweb, url2png.com, thumbalizr, BrowserShots ..

NO: Crack, warez, porn, Tweeter, Facebook use (I read only), P2P, screensavers and free games downloads, malware downloads for testing, etc etc.
But common sense, my best protector.

NO AV, Java, .NET 2.0 and above, M$ Office, Adobe Reader etc quick times.

That's all I remember .. listening the music stations by free Internet streaming player: Screamer Radio ..

RE: Prorootect's config

Hello Prorootect,
have you got any backup solutions?

If not here is a list of some that you could use and try.

RE: Prorootect's config

So as of right now you have no real time protection. With XP that is very poor judgement call. Also SP2 is no longer supported. Steps to follow:

1, Download and install SP3
2. Install either Avast Free or Panda Cloud Free
3. Install Comodo Firewall or leave XP's on
4. Upgrade your ram. 1GB of ram will not get you anywhere.
5. You could also go with a full suite like CIS

The problem right now is your OS is completed unsupported. Another big issue is only having 1GB of ram your limited on what security you use. Almost better of shopping for a new pc.

McLoving there is no sense in recommending a backup when his OS is completely unsupported. No security in the world can protect you from an out of date OS.

Best advice. Install SP3 and return back to us. Until then anything else is worthless.

I find this statement a bit odd "and common sense" when the user does not even have SP3. Hard to have common sense when you lack the knowledge to be using an unsupported OS. Knowledge level should be "beginner".

RE: Prorootect's config

You can also add Sandboxie or Bufferzone Pro depend on your choice as your virtualization. Its essential since you have no AV installed.

Jamescv7 not with only 1GB of ram and an out of date OS. Until he installs SP3 there is no sense in recommending anything. The fact that he only has 1GB of ram usually also means he has a weak processor.

RE: Prorootect's config

Yes, so Prorootect must read first the post about installing Windows XP SP3 and our suggestion must be the second step when he is done upgrading to SP3 and the RAM.

RE: Prorootect's config

@Hi McLovin,
'have you got any backup solutions?
If not here is a list of some that you could use and try.'
- THANK YOU very much for your valuable proposals, but I use Windows native System Restore points and backup solution which are suitable for my needs.:D

@Hi Maximus,
'So as of right now you have no real time protection.'
- But YES, I have, it's OK for my behavior on the Web.. No viruses here, thanks.

'With XP that is very poor judgement call.'
- It's your jugement; my jugement is opposite: it's the better OS forever. With my tweaks and extensive cleaning in processes and services.
Are you read my little sig, please?..;)

'Also SP2 is no longer supported. Steps to follow:
1, Download and install SP3 ..'
I'm happy without Windows Update cumbersome downloads. Are you hear of many complaints from people which downloaded SP3? Heavy, with unresolved issues. Thank you as well.

'2. Install either Avast Free or Panda Cloud Free'
- No, thanks. I used Avira AntiVir free, Immunet .. but now I'm happy with no AV, it's sufficient for my knowledge. Happy.

'3. Install Comodo Firewall or leave XP's on'
'4. Upgrade your ram. 1GB of ram will not get you anywhere.'
- But I love Windows XP for it's lightness; no brainer, easy to use, works well and quickly here with 1 GB RAM.

'5. You could also go with a full suite like CIS'
- yeah, CIS is very very good, but I prefer the lighteness of my setup rather, if you allow me.

Thank you for your advices!

RE: Prorootect's config

@McLovin, wj32 developer of Process Hacker - is from Australia too, cool ;)

@Maximus,
'The fact that he only has 1GB of ram usually also means he has a weak processor.'
- on Process Hacker I see 0 CPU, Non-Paged Usage 7,66 after PC restart, Threads around 190, Handles around 3000, Physical Memory Current: 224 MB. After restart, yes.

@jamescv7,
'Yes, so Prorootect must read ..'
-I read many, all days, thanks!:D

Yes, thank you all very much, I attend your comments, but now I must play with my cat! See you soon today ..;)

RE: Prorootect's config

Lol. This is the most funniest config thread ever. Are you joking or being serious? System Restore is not the same as a system image and anyone who proclaims themself as an advanced user should know this. Do you realize that not even Microsoft cares about your OS anymore? Do you know your pc is an open wound which is bleeding out due to security holes in your OS and no real time av. Anyone you claims they are an advanced user knows the benefits of installing SP3 and using a real time av.

Sorry not being rude but its hard to take anything you say seriously.

RE: Prorootect's config

Seems his computer cant handle more than XP, but i admit it is a strange config, no realtime AV on XP is like put a bleeding man inside a ring of hungry sharks. i think you have too many On-Demand scanners and Url checkers, just install a Realtime AV, some are very light rather than all those on-demand apps. it will save you time and space.

RE: Prorootect's config

Yes. you please update to XP SP3.
It would be better.
you are very very vulnerable to virus attacks, even if you are carefully when browsing the Internet.
updates of a software or OS is very important.

that's all I can suggest to you.
I will let you re-think about what I said above.

have a nice day, friend. :)

I'm interested to know what complaints you've heard about, I didn't experience any when I use to use Windows XP SP3.

Hmm, I think you should use Linux Mint instead since you have so many issues with Windows XP. :p

RE: Prorootect's config

Hi BoXX28,

But I do not have any problem with my Windows XP - everything runs smoothly and fast ..:D

I know I have not changed my security approach for some time now .. The proof is this post in another forum: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r25134794-
And another post: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r25224231-
These posts are from 1 year ago.

Lately I've thought of a lightweight HIPS, but .. I think I've needed anything extra. I tell you I really think ..

Edit: Will you please forgive me? ..because of my config? You all?..

RE: Prorootect's config

I'm okay with your choice for not using a Real Time AV and updating to Service Pack 3. It's just that we want you to be more secure. We have freedom of choice anyway.

RE: Prorootect's config

running SP2 you gotta be either:
A: crazy
B: still thinking the initial reports of problems reported when MS first launched SP3...

I am not really going to say much since everyone said it already, but at least upgrade to SP3...
And as Maximus said, System restore is no where near a backup solution at all. If you believe otherwise, I can only say good luck to you.

Although with your 1gb ram, I would rather attempt a Xubuntu system instead... would like to know however what exactly you do with your system?[/align]

RE: Prorootect's config

So maybe it's a bit 2004, but Windows XP can run perfectly with only 1GB of RAM, no need to upgrade or switch OS.
