Are Proton privacy and the Signal messaging app still secure? Every year this gets called into question, yet rarely is the full story ever told. In this video, Josh explains what's really happening with these privacy and security apps as well as how it affects YOU directly.

It's easy to get swept up in the news that a privacy company has handed over user data to a government intelligence agency. But what are the limitations of companies like @ProtonAG or Signal? Or perhaps more importantly, what is YOUR responsibility when using such apps, considering the fact that no single software or service can guarantee you privacy and anonymity?

It's crucial to remember that the level of security and privacy you get from these apps greatly depends on your usage. Proton and Signal do have strong encryption and privacy measures, but they are not infallible. Always stay informed about their limitations and your responsibilities as a user. Also, remember to keep your software updated for the best security.

Some key points for me:
  • Proton/Signal are not above the law and are required to hand over any data they have on you.
  • End-to-end encryption can only go so far. OpSec (the little security decisions you make every day using brain.exe) are far more important. Be smart about what information you want to travel through the Internet, double check URLs, don't use the same password twice, don't download shady programs from shady sites etc.
  • Proton and Signal are still very secure and private as the person using it.

Both are solid choices, both have good security teams and release functioning well designed software. Is Proton & Signal immune from bugs/exploits? No, but they do a much better job in respecting and protecting your privacy than many others and fix bugs quickly. Unless you use PGP in Proton email is insecure and can be tracked and scooped up for surveillance, then you have to worry about meta data in emails. Signal doesn't have to worry about those issues of clear text or learning to use PGP, E2EE is baked in so it's more secure by design than email or Proton if used wisely.

PGP is built in Proton email.( I may be interpreting your comment wrong.)
Is it now built into emails? I know you can encrypt Proton emails to other Proton members but last time I checked you had to upload your private key. Haven't used Proton in awhile, may be wrong.
