Add some good scanners like Zemana Portable, Emsisoft Emergency Kit, ESET Online Scanner. You can also try SysHardener to harden your OS.

Everything is covered based off the 3 layered approach.

Just add ZAM Free, ScriptSafe Web extension for your browser for script based and unwanted content.

MWB is great for PUP/Adware/Other unwanted content, ZAM would catch everything else.

Instead for AV, is Avast free (aggressive mode) a good choice?

I'd say yes. Hardened mode is good, can be paired with Syshardener.
