If you're running Windows 8, I strongly suggest you to update to Windows 8.1 and to install all the major updates (like Update 1).

Windows 8 will automatically get Update 1 included from upgrading to Win 8.1 via the Windows Store.

I suggest you to update to Windows 8.1 first (via the Windows Store, just search for "Store" via Win Key + S and it will bring it up, and it's the first thing you get when entering in it) and then we'll help you get a good back-up program.
