New Update Re-visit to AVG in 2025

You should have uncheck that component during installtion. I believe it was called "Safe Site"
I think the reason why they use the DNS is the following.
Another related feature is Real Site, which protects you against DNS hijacking — a type of attack where your browser might be redirected to a fake or harmful version of a legitimate site (for example, a fake banking or shopping page).
Real Site ensures that when you enter a web address, Avast uses a secure DNS connection to help make sure you reach the real site instead of a spoofed one

I prefer other DNS providers.

It's more like, Real Site = Avast DNS. Nothing more really. Real Site makes sure that your system uses Avast DNS for everything and not let other programs bypass it. It's ok but not letting users know that it's changing their DNS is always a sneaky behavior.
I wonder what happens when something like YogaDNS is used alongside Avast since YogaDNS also intercepts all DNS requests. Who wins the battle?

YogaDNS unless sth has changed from three years ago.

You don’t actually need the browser extensions for Gen Digital antivirus products, and this is a common misconception. The key thing to understand is that web protection is handled by the antivirus application itself, not the browser extension. Malicious websites, phishing attempts, and dangerous downloads are filtered at the system/application level, before the page is even fully loaded in your browser. This protection works regardless of which browser you use and even if no extension is installed. The browser extension is mostly just a supplementary layer. It adds convenience features like visual warnings in the browser, search result icons, or basic ad/tracker blocking but it’s not what provides the actual security.

If your main reason for keeping the extension is ad blocking, there are better tools for that. uBlock Origin is more effective, more configurable, and lighter on resources than antivirus browser extensions. The antivirus app already does the real work. The browser extension is optional and not necessary for protection—use it only if you specifically want the extra browser-side features.

I now use Norton that you gave me, and to make myself even more secure when I go to the bank, I use Norton Private Browser, which I have removed most of, only bank addresses left. Then I run Norton Private Browser in a sandbox for additional security.

I don't do online banking so I'm glad you found one of those features useful :)

i am going back to Norton soon
. AVG is a little to blunt for me. When they sold it it became something different
They are the same product, Including Norton just with different GUIs and toolsets. All of them use the same Avast engine if you check the “About” or product information and compare them, you’ll see they’re exactly the same. Is this a joke? In my opinion AVG is better less upsells it just does it's job.

AVG and Norton both use the same engine/technology that originated with Avast. It just has a different UI. They're all owned by the same company.

You might feel that you like the Norton interface, but when I gave it a trial recently, I found Norton's upselling to be quite aggressive.

Its a while since I used AVG (a year maybe) but when I did I was irked by the fact I did not want to use their safe browsing, which was renamed but basically a DNS change, this was highlighted in red in the GUI, as I use a VPN with their DNS or an alternative I found it unnecessary to highlight that in red, as if was doing something really unsafe, IMO it was an informed & better choice than theirs? has this changed, I am a bit fussy I know.

I have an AVG Ultimate that I got from nickstar1, and I run it like Norton on my other PC, but since AVG doesn't have a sandbox in its Private Browser, I run firefox/Google Chrome in Sandboxie only for banking. It works great.

I have AVG ultimate here are some updated pictures of the tools. I'm still in love with the GUI. You can find really cheap avg ultimate keys online and you wont have a single in product advertisement the experience is clean. They did some very very minor UI updates this year in 2026 but it's not really noticeable.

I recently installed AVG Ultimate on a friend’s computer and configured all detection settings to High. I chose not to enable Hardened Mode. Now we’ll see how well AVG performs and how long it takes before any potential infection occurs if it happens at all.

I originally went to my friend’s house to clean up his laptop and ended up performing a clean installation of Windows 11. The system was heavily infected, and I didn’t want to risk leaving anything behind, so a full reinstall was the safest option.

Over the next month or two, we’ll see how well AVG Ultimate protects his laptop. He frequently downloads game mods from various websites, which has contributed to past infections, so this will be a good test of the software’s effectiveness.

I did some testing and was able to get a sample to bypass the antivirus, but IDP successfully detected and handled it. However, I noticed that CyberCapture no longer seems to trigger, even though it’s enabled. Has its behavior changed? Is it now running silently in the background instead of displaying the usual pop-up notifications? I didn’t receive any alert indicating that the file was being processed by CyberCapture, as I normally would.

It seems like there may have been some engine changes. If CyberCapture is now operating more quietly in the background, that could actually be a positive improvement especially for less experienced users since it allows the software to do its job without unnecessary interruptions.

AVG is doing a great job with the new VPN GUI update. If you haven’t updated your VPN yet, I recommend checking for the latest version. Simply open the VPN interface, and it should notify you if an update is available. I’ve also included screenshots of the new GUI so you can see the updated design. How do you like the new GUI for AVG VPN? I'm thinking a new GUI for the internet security might be in the works! They also have a new extension which can be found here.

AVG keeps being an eyecandy along with solid protection.
