AV-Comparatives Real-World Protection Test February-May 2025

Disclaimer
  1. This test shows how an antivirus behaves with certain threats, in a specific environment and under certain conditions.
We encourage you to compare these results with others and take informed decisions on what security products to use.
Before buying an antivirus you should consider factors such as price, ease of use, compatibility, and support. Installing a free trial version allows an antivirus to be tested in everyday use before purchase.

This & other testing sites for me is a very rough guide, & may not be indicative of how I use the WWW, if you took to heart the results of this test & others you would be changing your AV & security on a weekly basis - On a personal basis I'm unimpressed with this testing site.
I do my own testing; results change from day to day; the first rank most of the time is reserved for K, followed by ESET sometimes, or by Avast-AVG other times, then SEP, MD, B, and Avira comes last.

I don't think there is much to choose between the main players anymore, as for me the simpler the better, I'm not interested in all singing all dancing AV's - Changing AV's can give more problems than the end result is worth it, find an AV you like & stay with it, & don't get flustered if your favourite AV goes down in the rating a little - For me I'm still a fan of Emsisoft (and less so F-secure) mainly for its simplicity & just being an anti-malware program which is why its the only AV I have a sub for - Others may feel differently about wants & needs?

Completely agree; after trying all free solutions, I have decided either K or MD; the rest are good but those two fit my needs.

Then posting threads of such test results is useless and is a waste.
Well no, test results are good and threads like this are great.

I'm just saying if I was given the choice of ESET and MD, I'd still personally choose ESET, others may well choose MD. Having choice is excellent.

I'd always opt for the company were the sole business focus is delivering security products. That's their niche, that's what they're good at.

Again, just my opinion.

One POV.
Those who choose MD have another one; MD is preinstalled in Windows and have the largest user-base and security telemetry; in addition, MS created MD is the same company who created Windows and knows best how it works.
I am not encouraging using MD over ESET; currently, I am using K.
However, either we take such test results with consideration, or to save time and effort and do not bother reading.

AV-Test beside the ambiguous"6", does not report the false positive rate, as the case with AVC, which is a signficant defect.
FP rate is as important as the detection rate; I can easily get 100% detection rate by flagging all the files, regardless of its nature.
They report the false positives in details in the last section "Usability" for every product.

somewhat curious to me that Trendmicro shows so many false_positives, when I don't get any (so far) but I probably don't download as much as I did in the past. (fwiw) & I think someone posted about TM hypersensitive setting that might be causing this at AVC...?

might need to download more less prevalent, freshly released executables to get some FPs; that is the scenario with MD.

I rather have FPs than TPs. The fact that it blocked most and compromised (2) says a lot about the effectiveness.

Configuration plays a role in it's sensitivity too. Also TM got OPR ( Official Pattern Release) and CPR ( Controlled Pattern Release ). It's called Official as those are perfectly fine tuned and it's called Controlled for a reason ( deployed during emergency, outbreaks etc etc for rapid release)
