If you compare how Windows 8 has been doing until now to how Windows 7 did in its first two years of existence, you will come to the conclusion that it did not do as well.

Some say it failed as much as Windows Vista did, and while there are certainly similarities between the two operating systems, it is an unfair comparison.

While Vista and 8 shipped after hugely successful Windows versions, XP and 7 to be precise, the why they failed is different.

As far as Windows 8 is concerned, it failed because it concentrated too much on the creation of a unified platform, on mobile and touch features, and not enough on the desktop part of the system.

In addition, decisions to make live for desktop users difficult, by removing the start menu or forcing them to start on the Start Screen interface, added to the frustration of many users.

And then there is the slowing of the PC market, largely attributed by a shift to mobile and consumption, and by the fact that PC hardware has not seen any evolution in recent time.

Microsoft did restore some features with Windows 8.1, and the upgrade is seen by many as a baby-step in the right direction.

What we do know for certain is that a service-pack like upgrade will be released in April 2014 for Windows 8.1. It is not clear if it will introduce any new features or modifications to the operating system.

The update could however be the last for Windows 8, as Microsoft could release Windows 9 as early as April 2015 according to Paul Thurrott.

It is a rumor at this point in time, but according to Paul's unnamed sources, Windows Threshold could indeed be Windows 9.

Again, this is a rumor and subject to change. It would however make sense to move away from the Windows 8 name as soon as possible due to its performance up to this point. It would also keep the "every second Windows is a good Windows" rule alive, provided that Microsoft is improving the experience for desktop users on Windows 9.

Two of the previous rumors in regards to Windows Threshold are that it will bring back a full start menu, and that it will allow users to run apps on the desktop in windows.

According to Paul, Microsoft will deliver three milestone releases prior to the public availability of Windows 9 in April 2015. The company won't release an early alpha version on this year's Build conference though as work won't have started yet on that version.

Microsoft has a year to deliver Windows 9. Some may say that this is not a long time, and that it is unlikely that Windows 9 will ship with many major changes and feature additions in comparison to Windows 8.

It is however enough time to further modify the operating system to make it more appealing to desktop users.

Win8, in my case, is not a failure: better security (secureboot, etc...), faster boot (hybrid boot via pseudo-hybernation), multi-platform, settings synchronization between computers/tablets (saved me quite some times), no useless resources wasting (Win7 glass effects, etc...), built-in pdf viewer (goodbye adobe) or archiver; etc...

most people i saw bashing Win8 has no clues about security, use only one computer, likes shiny effects, and are unable to adapt to a new usage of the interface, etc...

the only benefit in my eyes that Win7 offer compared to Win8 is a better technical usage aka more admin/tech tools, but "average Joe" has no clues about it

if Microsoft listened all the "average Joes", we will still use MS-Dos...

P.S: if you dont like , don't use and keep quiet; no one force you to use Win8 !

I have to agree Windows 8 is hardly a failure.Sure it is a big departure from what most users are accustomed to but it seems that most can't get past the start menu, which by spending a little time with the OS,is not a problem in my eyes.A little time spent with it and you can appreciate what can be done with it.Technology is ever changing and with the touchscreen tablets and PC's and a desire to sync across multiple devices,it almost had to be done. Many fail to look at the security and other features that make it a desirable OS.I think 8.1 was a positive upgrade. As far as Windows 9 who knows.I really don't see Windows 8 being used anytime soon in the workplace especially government agencies as most are now upgrading from XP to Windows 7 as the end of XP support draws near. Some new updates or a service pack for Windows 8 will only make it better than it is now.

Windows 8 is an excellent OS it is under-rated because they designed it for mobile systems forgetting about desktop users.
Two separate work environments (Metro and Desktop), designed for touch screen even though most Windows 8 laptops on the market did not come with touchscreen (display was too small on most mobile systems to even use touchscreen for normal functions, which made many users still depend on mouse and keyboard) and the removal of (Start Menu, Gadgets & Aero Glass) and complex learning curve to use Metro for normal functions which got a lot of users lost on how to do their regular tasks on Desktop.

Windows 8 added better security features like secure boot, IE11, Windows Defender and enhanced SmartScreen.
Metro apps are awesome especially Xbox free game apps, there is an app for just about anything you want.
For performance, it boots much faster and handles CPU cycles and memory better than Windows 7.

I really like my Windows 8 laptop after adding some tweaks to it, IObit Smart Menu, Aero effects, disable touchpad to use external mouse, etc.

Windows 8 was just misunderstood by a lot of users, hopefully Microsoft will learn from their mistakes.

Thanks. :D
