I followed the development of the open source version of Sandboxie Considering the fact that Sandboxie has a lot of lines of code and the fact that the person maintaining Sandboxie would need a lot of knowledge about security and the Windows OS, I thought the maintenance and further development of Sandboxie by the open source community would be to complex and take to much time.

I was not the only one being pessimistic about the future of Sandboxie. A lot of comments on security forums about the Sandboxie going open source were about Sandboxie becoming unusable after a few Windows updates. Which was not a strange thought because the Invincea/Sophos sandboxie team often released emergency updates to fixed new incompatibilities introduced with a Windows update.

I have been reading the releases notes of the open source version often and was surprised that David Xanatos not only managed to get to known Sandboxie, but also fix existing bugs and incompatibilities in the old source code while developing new features and a new user interface. Also the open source Sandboxie seems to suffer less from Windows and Browser updates than the nagware version of Ronen/Invincea/Sophos.

So to @DavidXanatos thanks for stepping in and applause for the improvements you made: 👏👏👏

I didn't know he was a member here. lol!

Installed 5.53.1 Classic over the top after exiting prior build. No SmartScreen alerts, as expected. Working great so far. Oh yeah, have to remind myself to try Plus again, I got annoyed and ditched it because of the bugs. Let's see if it's better this time around...:unsure::whistle::coffee:

@bjm_ What are your initial impressions of the latest Plus?

Well, on my daily rider and my dust collector. I've been installing Plus and running Classic.
I'll look at Plus - SandBox Manager just to see whats what and on occasion I'll run Plus UI, as test.
I'll look at Plus - look thru the menus to gain some familiarity and on occasion I may kick the tires.
I'll usually run Classic - Sandboxie Control....because I prefer Classic UI and don't daily use Plus features.
Note: my sbox usage is basic browsing. On occasion I'll run a program with Run Sandboxed.
Note: I backup Sandboxie.ini & Sandboxie-Plus.ini
~ initial impressions = 0.9.8b feels okay, for me.

@plat1098
just an example: Plus vs Classic
png_12160.pngpng_12161.png
Note: Plus -> Boxed Tools.
If I only installed Classic. I may not be aware re Plus -> Boxed Tools
It's kinda cool to call from systray menu...for example: Command Prompt sbox n'or Registry Editor sbox. Snapshot remains head scratch, for me...as does most Plus features.

Thanks for those screenshots; this is useful info. Based on your comments, many Plus features seem too involved and require a learning curve. He (DavidXanatos) should do an audit as to how many actually use these, like the Snapshot. Is it a commonly-used feature or not?

My rationale goes back to my earlier comment: Plus at one point had too many bugs to make it worthwhile to use. Classic on the other hand is currently quite friendly and there's no obscure setting or function to troubleshoot if you're getting problems after an update of browser, Sandboxie, etc.

Sometimes less is more, right? I'll be sticking with Classic for the near future. I just want things to work on a daily basis, not periodically indulge in a software adventure.

Yeah, maybe user/s asked for "Boxed Tools". IDK

Yeah, how many use Windows Filtering Platform. IDK

I'm a happy camper that DavidXanatos came along.
What DavidX does is okay by me...what DavidX wants to do is okay by me.
I don't understand most of what goes on over on GitHub.
I'm amazed how willing DavidX is to accommodate user comments/wants.
I'm happy DavidX came along.

Right! He breathed new life into what was in essence a wreck once Sophos let it go. It's actually a pleasant software (Classic) to use now, imo. I might look into his other software, like this "private Win10. I read some nice feedback about that one but haven't seen anything about it recently.

The only thing: it would be nice if he occasionally understood that not everyone who uses his software or posts in his threads is:

1. male
2. a coder

Don't know if you saw this over at Wilders but I have the vague recollection this was not the first time:
